Operations & Supply Chain · Manufacturing & production software
Most plants have a rough sense of how efficiently their machines run, but a rough sense isn't enough to justify a new machine purchase or defend a capacity number to a customer. OEE software calculates availability, performance and quality automatically from real machine and production data, giving one trustworthy number per machine or line.
App Advisor doesn't have a dedicated OEE Software category yet, so these are related manufacturing & production software listings that cover part of the job. Confirm the specific capability in a demo, or ask the advisor for a shortlist.

Once that number is accurate and consistent, it becomes useful: comparing shifts fairly, spotting which specific loss (downtime, slow running, or rejects) is actually hurting you most, and tracking whether improvement efforts are working. Picture this hypothetical example: a packaging line in Gujarat believed it was running at roughly 70% efficiency based on a supervisor's rough estimate; once OEE software broke the number down properly, the real figure was closer to 52%, with the biggest loss coming from short, frequent changeover stoppages nobody had been counting as downtime at all.
OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is a standard measure combining three factors: availability (is the machine running when it should be), performance (is it running at expected speed), and quality (is it producing good parts). OEE software automates the data collection behind this — machine run/stop status, cycle counts and rejection data — so the score is calculated consistently rather than estimated by hand, and broken down into which of the three factors is actually driving losses.
Confirm exactly how the system defines and calculates each of the three OEE factors, since vendors sometimes differ on details, and you want consistency you can defend in a review. Check how it handles planned stoppages (like scheduled breaks or changeovers) versus true downtime, since counting these wrong distorts the number significantly. Also verify how manual data entry is validated for machines without direct connectivity, since unreliable inputs make the whole OEE score meaningless.
Ask the vendor to calculate OEE live on sample data and walk through exactly how each factor was derived, so you can sanity-check the logic. Confirm whether it distinguishes planned downtime from unplanned, and ask how changeover time is treated. Check reporting flexibility — can you slice by shift, operator, product or machine easily — and ask for a reference plant using it for at least six months so you can hear how the numbers held up in practice. One pitfall to check directly: some vendors count changeover and short scheduled breaks as unplanned downtime by default, which unfairly drags a line's score down — ask exactly how planned stoppages are configured and excluded, since this single setting can shift the reported number significantly. Once that packaging line above fixed its changeover process based on the corrected OEE breakdown, output over a full quarter rose without adding a single extra shift or machine — the capacity had been sitting there unused the entire time, simply uncounted correctly.

World-class OEE is often cited around 85%, but a realistic starting benchmark for most plants is lower; what matters more is tracking your own trend and improving it consistently rather than chasing an external benchmark.
Yes, manual data entry via a touchscreen at the machine can feed OEE calculations, though automated sensor data is generally more accurate and less effort for operators.
Utilisation typically only measures whether a machine is running; OEE combines availability with speed performance and output quality, giving a fuller picture of true effectiveness.
Good OEE software breaks the score into its three components and links downtime to specific reasons, so you can see whether the issue is stoppages, slow running, or rejects.
Yes, as long as data collection is consistent across shifts, OEE software allows a fair like-for-like comparison, which is much harder to do reliably with manual tracking.
