Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the cloud computing subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., based in Seattle, Washington. AWS says it has provided cloud services since it launched in 2006. It offers compute, storage, databases, networking, analytics, machine learning and generative AI services on a pay-as-you-go basis. Matt Garman has been CEO of AWS since June 2024, according to Amazon's annual report. Before taking over as AWS CEO, Garman was Senior Vice President at Amazon Web Services from February 2021.

Products commonly used by Indian businesses include Amazon EC2 and Lightsail for servers, Amazon S3 for storage, Amazon RDS and DynamoDB for databases, Amazon SES for transactional email, Amazon Connect for cloud contact centres, and Amazon Lex and Bedrock for conversational and generative AI. Pricing is usage-based, and many services include a free tier.

AWS runs two infrastructure regions in India. The Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region, ap-south-1, launched in June 2016. The Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) region, ap-south-2, launched in November 2022. Indian customers can therefore keep workloads and data inside the country. AWS sells directly online and through consulting and reseller partners. Amazon Web Services India Private Limited contracts with and invoices many Indian customers. The Hyderabad region was AWS's second in India and, like Mumbai, launched with three availability zones. That lets Indian customers design for high availability without sending data out of the country.

AWS's infrastructure page lists 39 geographic regions with 124 availability zones worldwide, and says more are planned. Andy Jassy, who led AWS from its early years until 2021, is now President and CEO of Amazon.com, Inc.
