Payment gateways let you collect money online through UPI, cards, net banking, wallets and EMI, and settle it to your bank. In India the gateway choice affects success rates, settlement speed and the fees you pay on every rupee, so it deserves more attention than the sign-up flow suggests.

Compare the total cost: MDR on UPI is zero by regulation, but cards, net banking and international payments carry 1.5–3%, plus GST on fees.
Ask for success-rate data on your traffic mix. A gateway with weak bank integrations loses a few percent of every checkout silently.
Check onboarding requirements — website content, business registration, bank verification — before building the checkout.

UPI is free of MDR on every gateway. For cards and net banking, most mainstream gateways charge around 2% plus GST; volume businesses negotiate lower rates. Compare success rates before fees — a 3% drop in success costs more than a 0.3% fee difference.
India buyer's guide
A payment gateway lets an Indian business accept money online through UPI, debit and credit cards, net banking, wallets and EMI, and settles the collected funds into its current account. Gateways operating in India are regulated by the Reserve Bank as payment aggregators, which shapes onboarding checks, card data rules such as tokenisation, and how quickly settlements must reach merchants.
Good gateways approve payments reliably across banks, settle on a predictable schedule, show clear reconciliation reports and handle refunds and chargebacks without drama. Poor ones have high failure rates on certain banks or UPI apps, hold funds without explanation, make KYC slow and opaque, and bury extra charges for international cards, instant settlement or specific payment methods in the fine print.
Judge a gateway by success rate and settlement, not only the per-transaction fee. Ask for success rates by method, test UPI intent and collect flows on several apps, try cards from different banks, and check how failed payments are retried. Review settlement timelines, reconciliation reports, refund speed and dispute handling. The best payment gateway for you is the one that captures the most payments at acceptable cost and settles predictably.

Small businesses need quick onboarding with simple KYC, a hosted checkout or plugin for their website builder or ecommerce platform, UPI and card acceptance, payment links for WhatsApp orders, and settlements to their current account on a fixed schedule. A mobile dashboard to check payments and issue refunds is important. Avoid annual maintenance or setup fees where zero-setup options exist.
Gateways built for India support every UPI flow including intent, collect and QR, RuPay cards, net banking across many banks, EMI and pay-later options, recurring payments under RBI's e-mandate rules, and card tokenisation. They settle in rupees to Indian accounts, support GST-compliant invoicing of their fees, and offer Hindi or regional support. Some add payouts, virtual accounts and marketplace split settlements.

App Advisor publishes no user ratings. Many negative gateway reviews stem from KYC delays or funds held on risk checks. In your evaluation, verify onboarding documents required for your business type, test payment success in sandbox and in a small live pilot, confirm settlement cycle and chargeback process in writing, and ask how account holds are communicated and resolved. How App Advisor rates software.
Compare: payment methods supported, success rates by method, pricing per method, settlement cycle and instant settlement cost, reconciliation reports, refund speed, chargeback handling, recurring payments and mandates, international card acceptance, checkout customisation, plugin and SDK coverage, payouts, split settlements, dashboard quality and support responsiveness. Ask for each number in writing, because rate cards and success-rate claims are often stated only verbally during sales conversations. Test the dashboard with your accounts team as well as developers.
Gateways in India typically charge a percentage per successful transaction, varying by method, with UPI often priced differently from cards and international cards charged higher. Some charge fixed fees per transaction for certain methods, set-up or annual fees, and extra for instant settlement, EMI or specialised products. Negotiated custom rates are common for higher volumes.
Every published plan, its billing term and whether GST is extra is on the payment gateway price list for India, each price linked to the vendor's own pricing page.
There is rarely a truly free gateway since every transaction has costs. Some offer zero setup fee, no annual charge, or promotional pricing on certain methods. Occasionally UPI transactions are priced at or near zero for small merchants depending on regulations. Read what free covers and what happens after the promotional period. Also compare settlement terms, because a gateway with no fixed fee can still be costly if funds settle slowly.
Gateways typically provide test mode rather than a trial. Integrate in sandbox, test success, failure and refund flows, and webhooks. Then go live with a small pilot, route a portion of traffic and compare success rates with your current gateway. Check settlement arrives when promised, and that reconciliation reports match your order system. Keep the old gateway active until the pilot has run through a full settlement cycle.
Ask the gateway to share success rates by payment method and bank, settlement timelines, instant settlement options, how risk holds work and how you will be informed, documents needed for KYC, chargeback process and timelines, available SDKs and plugins, and support escalation paths. Ask for a sample settlement and reconciliation report. Ask whether pricing can be revisited as volumes grow and how often rates are reviewed.

Startups need quick onboarding, clean APIs and SDKs, subscription billing with e-mandates, webhooks, test mode, and support for international cards if selling abroad. Payouts APIs for refunds, vendor or partner payments help. Check onboarding requirements for new companies without much trading history, and whether the gateway supports your business category. Ask how the gateway treats rapid growth in volume, since sudden spikes can trigger risk reviews and settlement holds.
MSMEs need payment collection for invoices, often through payment links or QR codes, alongside website checkout. Integration with accounting software for auto-reconciliation, settlement to the current account, and clear GST invoices for fees help. Look for simple dashboards staff can use for refunds and reports without developer help. Check whether staff logins can be restricted so that only the owner can issue refunds.
Manufacturers collecting from dealers and distributors need virtual accounts or unique identifiers for each buyer to automate reconciliation, high-value transaction support, net banking and bank transfer options, and ERP integration. Payment links for invoices and credit notes, plus reporting by dealer, are useful. Some need split settlements for different business units. Ask about limits on single high-value transactions and whether RTGS-sized collections can be accepted online.
Retailers need online checkout, in-store QR and card acceptance, and unified reporting across channels. Integration with POS for unified reconciliation, EMI options for high-ticket goods, and quick refunds matter. During sale periods, gateway uptime and success rate at high volume are critical; ask about failover options. Check whether the same merchant account can cover online and in-store acceptance for unified settlement.
Agencies building sites and apps for clients need clear documentation, plugins for common platforms, sandbox access and partner programmes. They may need to onboard clients as sub-merchants or set up marketplace flows. Check who owns the merchant account and KYC so clients are not tied to the agency. Also verify test credentials can be shared safely with developers.
GST support for a gateway covers two things. First, the gateway must issue a GST invoice for its fees with your GSTIN so you can claim input tax credit on the 18% GST. Second, reports should help reconcile collections with sales invoices for GSTR-1. For ecommerce operators, gateways do not handle TCS; that remains with the marketplace. Some gateways offer invoice generation features alongside payments.
Look for alternatives when success rates drop, funds are held unpredictably, fees are uncompetitive for your payment mix, or you need methods the current gateway lacks. Switching means new KYC, integration, and updating plugins and webhooks. Many businesses run two gateways with routing to improve success and reduce dependency. Recurring mandates may need re-authorisation. Keep both live for a cycle before cutting over.

Gateway affiliate or referral programmes usually reward referring merchants who activate and transact. Check whether rewards are one-time or based on transaction volume, how activation is defined, payout timelines, and compliance rules on how the gateway can be promoted. Be transparent with referred merchants about fees. Check whether rewards are withheld if a referred merchant fails risk review later, and read the rules on stating fees in promotional material.
Partner programmes suit software platforms, agencies and developers integrating payments into their products. They may offer revenue share on transactions, faster onboarding for referred merchants, technical support and co-marketing. Check contract terms on revenue share, data access, and responsibilities for merchant KYC and risk. Ask whether partner-referred merchants get faster onboarding or dedicated support contacts.
Reselling payment gateways is constrained by RBI's payment aggregator rules; only authorised entities can onboard merchants. Partners can typically refer or integrate merchants, but the gateway performs KYC and holds the relationship. Clarify your role, liability and revenue share, and avoid holding merchant funds yourself. Get the agreement reviewed by someone familiar with payment aggregator regulations before signing.
All verified programs across categories are in the software partner program directory. More India software guides: business software in India.
Activation depends on KYC. With complete documents such as PAN, GST certificate, bank account proof and a live website showing policies, many gateways activate within days. Some business categories need additional checks. Incomplete websites without terms, refund and privacy policies are a common cause of delay.
Failures can come from the customer's bank server, the UPI app, network issues or timeouts. Gateways differ in how they route and retry. Ask the gateway for method-level success rates, and consider enabling UPI intent on mobile, which usually performs better than collect requests.
Technically, a gateway provides the technology that routes payment data, while an aggregator also collects funds on the merchant's behalf and settles them. In India most providers merchants use act as RBI-regulated payment aggregators offering both functions. The distinction matters mainly for regulatory licensing, not daily use.
Yes, many gateways support international cards and some support other international methods, subject to additional KYC and export documentation. Fees are usually higher and settlement is in rupees. For export of services, check purpose codes and foreign inward remittance documentation for your records.
If a customer disputes a card payment with their bank, the gateway notifies you and asks for evidence such as invoices and delivery proof. If you cannot defend it, the amount is debited from your settlements. Keep clear records and respond within the deadline the gateway sets.
Yes. Many businesses use two or more gateways to improve payment success through routing, reduce dependence on one provider and negotiate better rates. Some ecommerce platforms and orchestration tools make it easier to manage multiple gateways. Routing rules can send each method to whichever gateway performs best.
