Confirm the vendor helps with DLT registration and template approval; that is the operational bottleneck.
Ask for delivery rate reports on your target circles before you buy volume.
For OTPs, check latency and fallback options — a slow OTP costs sign-ups.

Distributed Ledger Technology registration mandated by TRAI. Every business must register its sender header and message templates before sending commercial SMS in India.
India buyer's guide
An SMS marketing platform lets an Indian business send promotional offers, transactional alerts and OTPs to customers' phones in bulk, from a registered sender ID. In India that job is shaped by TRAI's commercial communication rules: every sender must be registered on a DLT platform, every message body must match an approved template, and promotional traffic is blocked for numbers on the do-not-disturb registry or outside permitted hours.
The difference between a good and a poor platform shows up after the first campaign. Good ones make DLT header and template mapping painless, report real delivery status from the operator rather than just 'submitted', separate transactional and promotional routes properly, and handle opt-outs automatically. Weak ones hide failed deliveries, lose credits when a template is rejected, and leave you chasing support when a telecom operator changes its scrubbing rules.
Judge an SMS platform on delivery, not on the price per credit. Send the same approved template to a test list spread across Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL numbers and compare operator-level delivery reports and latency. Check how the tool links your DLT entity ID, headers and content templates, whether it flags a variable mismatch before sending, and whether OTP traffic runs on a separate high-priority route. Finally, look at the API documentation and the webhook for delivery receipts; you will depend on both.

A shop, clinic or coaching class usually needs three things: festive-offer blasts to a customer list, appointment or order reminders, and a simple way to import contacts from a spreadsheet or billing software. Favour platforms that help with DLT registration paperwork, let you buy small credit packs without an annual commitment, and show a plain dashboard of delivered, failed and DND-blocked numbers. Short-link tracking and a Hindi or regional-language Unicode option are worth more than advanced automation at this size.
Platforms built for India treat DLT as a core feature rather than an afterthought: they store your principal entity ID, map each header to its templates, and scrub against the national DND registry before charging you. They usually offer separate OTP, transactional, service-implicit and promotional routes, Unicode SMS for Indian scripts, missed-call and long-code services, and support staff who know how operator scrubbing works. Billing is in rupees with GST invoices, and prepaid credit packs are common.

App Advisor publishes no user ratings, so treat review sites as a starting list only. Many complaints about SMS tools are really about DLT template rejections or operator filtering, which the vendor cannot fully control. In a trial, verify what you can measure: actual delivery reports per operator, how quickly a failed OTP is retried, whether unused credits expire, how refunds for undelivered messages are handled, and how fast support replies when a template is blocked. How App Advisor rates software.
Put these rows in the comparison sheet: DLT integration depth, route types available, delivery-report granularity (operator status, not just submission), OTP latency, Unicode and flash SMS support, API and webhook quality, credit validity and refund rules for failures, DND scrubbing before or after charging, contact list segmentation, short URL click tracking, opt-out handling, and whether WhatsApp or RCS fallback is available from the same account.
Most Indian SMS platforms price per message credit, with the rate falling as pack size grows. Promotional, transactional and OTP routes are often priced differently, and a Unicode message or one longer than a single segment consumes more than one credit. Some vendors charge only for delivered messages, others for every submitted message. Dedicated sender headers, long codes, short codes and missed-call numbers are typically billed as monthly rentals on top of usage.
Your real spend depends on message length, language and delivery basis. A promotional message in a regional script can use multiple credits per recipient, and a vendor that bills on submission charges you for DND-blocked and failed numbers. Add credit expiry, which quietly wastes prepaid balance, plus rentals for virtual numbers and any platform fee for campaigns or APIs. GST at 18% applies to the invoice. DLT registration on the operator portal carries its own separate fee.
Free SMS plans in India are rare because each message costs the platform money at the operator. What you usually get is a handful of test credits, sending only to verified numbers, a shared or demo sender header, and no access to OTP routes. Delivery reports and API access may be locked, and you cannot run a real promotional campaign until your own DLT header and templates are registered and linked.
Trial lengths as each vendor states them are listed on the free SMS marketing platform page.
Ask the vendor to show a template being mapped to your DLT header live, and what happens when a variable exceeds the approved length. Ask which operators they connect to directly and which through aggregators, how OTP traffic is prioritised during festive peaks, whether you pay for undelivered or DND-scrubbed numbers, how long credits last, and how delivery receipts reach your CRM or app. Request a sample operator-level report.

Manufacturers use SMS for dealer and distributor communication, dispatch and delivery alerts, service-visit scheduling and warranty registration confirmations. Useful features include group lists by region or channel partner, templates with variables for invoice number and vehicle number, missed-call registration for warranty or leads, and integration with the ERP so alerts fire when a dispatch is posted. Delivery to rural numbers on smaller operators matters here.
Retailers lean on SMS for loyalty points updates, bill-sent links, sale announcements and festive offers. They need segmentation by store, purchase history or last visit, tracked short links to measure footfall or online orders, and tight control of timing because promotional SMS cannot go out at night. Integration with the POS so a digital bill or points balance is sent at checkout is a strong reason to choose one tool over another.
Agencies running SMS for several clients need sub-accounts, each linked to that client's own DLT entity and headers, with separate credit balances and reports. White-label dashboards, client-wise billing and the ability to move credits between sub-accounts save a lot of admin. Check whether the vendor lets the agency submit templates on behalf of clients and how disputes over failed deliveries are handled.
For the subscription itself, make sure the vendor issues a proper GST tax invoice for every credit purchase with your GSTIN and the correct place of supply, so you can claim input tax credit on the 18% charged. Prepaid packs should be invoiced on purchase, not left as a receipt. Feature-wise, SMS matters for GST only indirectly: many businesses use it to send invoice links or payment reminders from their billing software.
Look elsewhere when OTP delivery is slow, delivery reports stay stuck at 'submitted', or DLT template mapping keeps failing. Switching is simpler than for most software: your DLT registration, headers and templates belong to you on the operator portal, so you mainly need to link them to the new vendor's telemarketer ID. Export contact lists and opt-out records, use up or claim refunds on remaining credits, and change API keys in your app.

SMS affiliate programmes usually pay for referring a business that signs up and buys credits, sometimes recurring on its later top-ups. Before joining, check how referrals are tracked, whether commission is paid on credit value or only platform fees, the payout threshold and schedule, and whether you may bid on the vendor's brand terms. Promote only if you understand DLT, because referred customers will ask you about it.
Partner programmes suit software firms and consultants who build SMS into their own products, such as billing, school or clinic apps. Expect API access, reseller-level credit rates, technical support and sometimes joint sales. Check whether partners can register DLT templates on behalf of their customers, what service levels apply to OTP routes, and who owns the customer relationship if the partner exits.
SMS reselling typically means buying credits wholesale and selling them to your own clients through a white-labelled panel. Check that the panel supports sub-accounts with individual DLT mapping, per-client pricing and GST invoicing, and that the upstream vendor's routes are direct with operators. You carry the compliance risk if a client sends unregistered content, so read the acceptable-use terms closely.
All verified programs across categories are in the software partner program directory. More India software guides: business software in India.
Yes. Any business sending commercial SMS must register as a principal entity on an operator's DLT portal, register its sender headers and get each message template approved. The SMS platform then links your entity ID to its own telemarketer registration. Without this, operators block the messages regardless of which vendor you use.
The usual reasons are that the number is on the do-not-disturb registry, the message did not match the approved template word for word, it was sent outside permitted hours, or the number is inactive. A good platform shows the operator's failure reason per number, which tells you whether to fix the template or clean the list.
Yes, through Unicode SMS, as long as the template is registered on DLT in that script. Remember that Unicode messages hold far fewer characters per segment than English, so a regional-language message often uses two or three credits. Preview the segment count in the platform before sending to a large list.
Transactional and service messages, such as OTPs, order updates and payment alerts, can reach DND numbers at any hour when they match a registered template of that category. Promotional messages cannot reach DND numbers and are restricted to daytime hours. Sending an offer disguised as a transactional message risks having your templates or header blocked.
Many businesses use both. SMS works on every phone without an app or internet connection and is the dependable choice for OTPs. WhatsApp allows richer content and replies but needs opted-in users and approved templates. Some platforms offer both from one account with automatic SMS fallback when a WhatsApp message fails.
Generally yes. Headers and templates are registered to your business on the DLT portal, not to the vendor. You add the new vendor's telemarketer as an authorised party in the portal and share your entity ID. Plan a short overlap so OTP traffic keeps flowing while the new route is tested.
