Decide between hardware GPS (accurate, per-vehicle cost) and driver-app tracking (cheaper, less reliable).
For last-mile delivery, route optimisation and POD matter more than telematics.
Check e-way bill and freight document integration for interstate transport.

Hardware plus subscription typically runs ₹200–₹600 per vehicle per month; software-only driver-app tracking costs less.
India buyer's guide
GPS tracking software shows where vehicles or assets are, where they have been and what they were doing on the way. In India it is used by transporters, school bus operators, cab fleets, construction equipment owners and field sales teams, and for commercial and public transport vehicles it intersects with AIS-140 requirements for approved tracking devices with emergency buttons linked to state backends.
The software side matters as much as the device. Good platforms offer accurate live location, clear trip history, geofence alerts, ignition and idling reports, and shareable tracking links. Poor ones freeze when the device loses network, show jumpy routes, and bury useful alerts in noise. Device quality, SIM data plans and installation also affect accuracy, so buy the system as a whole.
The best GPS tracking software in India combines reliable devices with a clear, responsive platform. Check update frequency, data buffering when network drops, geofencing, overspeed and route deviation alerts, ignition and idling reports, fuel sensor support, AIS-140 compliance where required, customer tracking links, and a mobile app that loads quickly. Integration with fleet, logistics or ERP systems through APIs adds long-term value.

Small fleet owners need a reliable device, a simple app for live location and trip history, overspeed and geofence alerts, and daily distance reports. Avoid paying for advanced analytics you will not use. Check SIM renewal costs after the first year, whether the vendor provides local installation and support in your city, and how quickly a faulty device is replaced.
GPS tracking solutions built for India often offer AIS-140 certified devices, integration with state emergency backends where mandated, SIM plans suited to Indian networks with multi-operator fallback, and apps in regional languages. They include features for school buses, such as parent notifications and stop-arrival alerts, and for trucks, such as FASTag data. Support usually includes on-site device servicing through local technicians.

App Advisor does not publish user ratings. When reading reviews elsewhere, look for complaints about device failures, delayed locations, app crashes, sudden SIM deactivation or poor service response. In a trial, install devices on a few vehicles on varied routes, compare the app's trip distance with odometer readings, and time how long an overspeed or geofence alert takes to reach your phone. How App Advisor rates software.
Compare GPS tracking options on device certification and build quality, update intervals, offline data buffering, alert types, reports, fuel and temperature sensor support, immobilisation features, API access, mobile and web app usability, data retention period, installation and service network, and SIM data plans. Also compare warranty length, replacement terms and whether devices are locked to the vendor's platform.
GPS tracking in India is usually priced as a one-time device cost plus an annual software and SIM subscription per vehicle, or as a monthly rental combining device, SIM and platform. Add-on sensors for fuel, temperature or door status and features like video telematics or dashcams are priced separately. Installation may be charged per vehicle, especially outside major cities.
The total includes device hardware, installation, annual platform and SIM fees, sensor add-ons, AIS-140 backend registration where applicable, and any API or integration charges. Renewals after the first year can differ from the initial bundle price, so ask for them in writing. GST at 18% applies on the software subscription. Factor in replacement costs for damaged or tampered devices.
Free GPS tracking apps exist for phone-based tracking of staff or personal vehicles, but they depend on the phone's battery, GPS settings and the user's cooperation. Free tiers of fleet tracking platforms may limit vehicles, alerts or history to a few days. Device-based tracking almost always involves hardware and SIM costs, so a truly free vehicle tracking setup is rare.
Trial lengths as each vendor states them are listed on the free GPS tracking software page.
Ask the vendor to show live tracking, trip playback, geofence and overspeed alerts, AIS-140 emergency button behaviour where relevant, and reports on idling, stoppages and night driving. Ask about data retention, API access, device warranty, service turnaround in your region, SIM renewal terms and whether devices can be moved to another platform if you leave.
Start-ups building mobility, rental or logistics services need GPS platforms with good APIs, webhooks for location events, scalable device onboarding and flexible pricing. Check whether you can white-label tracking links and embed maps in your own apps, and whether the vendor supports two-wheeler trackers and immobilisation for rental fleets where theft is a risk. Ask how many devices a single account can hold.
MSMEs with vehicle fleets need reliable tracking, route and idling reports, and alerts for after-hours use or route deviation. Integration with fleet or logistics software avoids duplicate data entry for trips. Service support across the regions where vehicles operate is important, as is a platform that lets branch managers see only their vehicles. Weekly exception summaries by email help busy owners who rarely open the app.
Manufacturers use GPS tracking for outbound trucks, inbound supplier vehicles and sometimes high-value equipment such as generators or cranes at project sites. Tracking links for dealers and geofence alerts at plant gates and warehouses help coordinate loading bays and cut waiting time. Temperature sensors matter for chemicals and food products moved in reefer vehicles. Ask whether the platform stores seal numbers.
Retailers use GPS tracking for delivery vans to share live delivery status with customers and to confirm that store replenishment arrives in the promised window. Integration with delivery management systems, automatic arrival notifications and stoppage reports that reveal unplanned halts between stores add value beyond simply seeing vans on a map. Photo proof at each drop adds further assurance.
Agencies managing vehicles for clients, such as employee transport operators and school bus contractors, need multi-client access, parent or employee notification features, panic button handling and compliance reports that clients can audit. Route adherence reports and trip logs per client help resolve billing disputes over kilometres run. Check that route changes can be pushed to drivers quickly and that alerts reach the client's own control room.
GPS tracking software itself is not a GST compliance tool, though location records can support e-way bill trip evidence and vehicle updates. Devices and subscriptions may carry different GST rates, so ask for separate line items. Request GST invoices on your GSTIN so you can claim input tax credit, including on the 18% charged for the software service.
Consider alternatives when device failures are frequent, support is slow, or the platform lacks alerts and reports you need. Before switching, check whether existing devices can be reconfigured to another platform or are locked, export trip history needed for disputes or audits, and plan SIM transitions. For AIS-140 vehicles, confirm backend re-registration steps. Inform drivers before any device swap.

GPS tracking affiliate programmes usually reward referrals of customers who buy devices and subscriptions, tracked by link or code. They suit transport consultants, school management advisers and vehicle accessory dealers. Check payout terms, whether rewards apply to renewals as well as first sales, and the attribution rules when a local installer also claims the customer.
Partners typically install devices, provide local service and integrate tracking with customer systems. Before joining, check training on installation and AIS-140 procedures, device supply and stocking terms, support responsibilities between you and the vendor, and revenue sharing on renewals. Clarify responsibility when a vehicle's wiring causes device failure. Ask whether partners get a stock of demo units and priority access to firmware updates.
Resellers buy devices and subscriptions at a margin and sell to local customers under their own relationship. Check pricing, warranty handling and replacement stock, SIM management and renewal collection, and continuity of service for customers if your agreement ends. Confirm whether devices can be activated on the platform without the vendor's staff. Ask about firmware updates too.
All verified programs across categories are in the software partner program directory. More India software guides: business software in India.
AIS-140 is an Indian standard covering vehicle location tracking devices and emergency buttons for public service and many commercial passenger vehicles. Several states enforce it through permit and fitness checks. If your vehicles fall under the mandate, use certified devices registered with the state backend, and keep the certificate for inspections.
Update intervals depend on the device and plan, and many are configurable, with faster updates while moving and slower ones when parked. More frequent updates use more SIM data. Check whether the device stores positions when the network is unavailable and uploads them later, so trip history has no gaps.
Some devices support immobilisation through a relay that prevents the engine from restarting once switched off. This is useful against theft or non-payment in rental fleets. Use it carefully, never on a moving vehicle, and follow the vendor's safety guidance and applicable rules.
Most platforms let you share a temporary tracking link by SMS, email or WhatsApp that shows the vehicle's location until delivery or expiry. Check that the link hides the driver's phone number and other vehicles, and that it expires automatically after the trip.
Phone-based tracking works for field staff and occasionally for hired vehicles, but it depends on battery, GPS settings and the driver keeping the app open. For owned vehicles, a wired device is more reliable, tamper-alerting and independent of the driver's phone.
Good devices send alerts for power disconnection, low backup battery or tampering, and record when the event happened. Installing the device in a concealed location, sealing connections and checking offline reports weekly reduce misuse by drivers. Tamper alerts should reach the owner, not only the driver.
