Clear

Clear, formerly ClearTax, is a Bengaluru-based financial and tax compliance software company. Its legal entity is Defmacro Software Pvt. Ltd. It was founded in 2011, and its co-founders include Archit Gupta (Founder and CEO), Srivatsan Chari and Ankit Solanki. Clear began with online income tax return filing for individuals and later expanded into business compliance software. The company joined Y Combinator's Summer 2014 batch and rebranded from ClearTax to Clear in June 2021.

For Indian businesses, Clear's main products are Clear GST for GST return filing and reconciliation, Clear e-Invoicing and e-way bill software, TaxCloud (including TDS compliance), and accounts payable and invoice automation tools. For individuals and tax professionals it offers income tax filing and expert-assisted services. The products listed on this site include ClearTax GST, TaxCloud, ClearTax e-Invoicing and Cleartax TaxCloud India.

Clear sells to enterprises through direct sales, and to SMEs and chartered accountants through self-serve subscriptions priced in rupees. Individuals can file income tax returns on free and paid assisted plans. The company says it serves 2,000+ brands and 700,000+ businesses. Clear's website states that ClearTax is a product of Defmacro Software Pvt. Ltd.

Clear lists its investors as Y Combinator (angel round), Founders Fund and Sequoia Capital (seed), Elevation Capital (Series A) and Composite Capital (Series B). Individual backers include Max Levchin, Scott Banister and Vijay Shekhar Sharma. Its website says its data centre is ISO 27001 certified. In October 2021 Clear announced US$75 million in funding that included Stripe. Its YC profile lists a team of about 900 people.
