Quick answer: You can issue a GST invoice from your phone in under a minute with a mobile billing app. Vyapar and myBillBook are the two best-known for small Indian businesses, and Swipe is a strong third if you want quick invoicing with WhatsApp sharing and Tally integration. Choose by who bills (you or staff), whether you need stock, and what happens when you want a laptop view later.
When a phone is enough
Think about the electrician who finishes a job at a customer's home, the tailor taking orders in the market, the wholesaler's salesman on the road, or the clinic owner who bills only in the evening. None of them has a desk. Waiting until they return to a computer means invoices go out late, and late invoices get paid late.
A mobile billing app moves the invoice to the moment of sale. The customer gets the bill on WhatsApp before you leave, the amount is recorded against their name, and payment reminders happen without you opening a laptop.
What the three apps say they do
I have used each vendor's own website for this section.
Vyapar says you can create GST invoices and e-invoices, customise bill formats with your shop name and logo, accept cash, UPI, card or bank transfer, and send bills and payment reminders on WhatsApp. It lists estimates and quotations that convert into invoices, e-way bills, a barcode generator and scanner, and availability on Android, iOS, Windows and Mac with cloud sync. It also lists a lifetime free plan on mobile and says it is trusted by 1.5 Cr+ Indian businesses (Vyapar's own claim).
myBillBook says you can create a GST bill in 8 seconds (its claim), send WhatsApp and SMS payment reminders with UPI links, generate GSTR-1, GSTR-2 and GSTR-3B reports, handle e-invoicing and e-way bills, and use quotations and purchase orders. It lists PC, web, Android and iOS with real-time sync and multi-user access.
Swipe says invoices can be created in under 10 seconds with customisable templates, sent by WhatsApp, email or SMS with automated payment reminders. It lists e-invoice generation, e-way bills, inventory tracking, Tally and Shopify integrations, bulk import, GSTR JSON export and an AI feature for automated data filling, on iOS and Android. Swipe also says it serves over 25 million businesses globally, which is the vendor's statement and not a verified figure.

Seven things to try on a free trial
Download the app and, before spending anything, do this with a real customer:
- Create a customer with a GSTIN and an invoice with two items at different GST rates.
- Share it on WhatsApp and open it on another phone. Is it readable?
- Record a part-payment by UPI and see whether the balance updates.
- Raise a credit note against that invoice.
- Add a staff login and see what the staff member can and cannot view.
- Turn off mobile data and try to create a bill. Learn what happens.
- Export a report to PDF or Excel and send it to your CA.
If any step is awkward on a small screen, it will be awkward every day.
How mobile billing helps a business grow
Faster invoicing sounds like a convenience, but the growth effect shows up in three places.
Cash comes in sooner. An invoice sent on WhatsApp while the customer is still in front of you is paid sooner than one posted days later. Add a UPI payment option and the gap narrows further.
Owners see numbers without being present. When bills, stock and dues sit in one app, you can check the day's sales from home. That frees you to visit customers or source new stock instead of standing at the counter.
Customers see you as organised. A clean, branded GST invoice with your logo and a payment link changes how a buyer treats your business, particularly when you are selling to other companies who need proper paperwork.
None of this requires an expensive system. It requires the habit of creating every bill in the app, with no exceptions, from the first day.
Phone-only risks to plan for
A phone is a fragile device for business records. A few plain habits protect you.
- Back up. Confirm cloud sync is on, and test by logging in on a second device.
- Lock the app. Staff phones are shared, lost and handed to repair shops.
- Separate staff from owner. An employee should create bills but not delete them or see profit reports.
- Keep the GST view in front of your CA. Give the CA access or share exports every month; do not let returns pile up in a phone.
- Do not rely on a single number for OTP. Keep a recovery method.
Rolling out to a small team in a week
Day 1: Install the app, create your business profile with GSTIN, address and logo, and set invoice numbering to match your current series.
Day 2: Import customers and items. Most apps accept a spreadsheet; use it rather than typing.
Day 3: Add bank and UPI details to the invoice so payment is one tap away.
Days 4 and 5: Bill live, with the old method as a backup.
Day 6: Check the outstanding list and send the first reminders. Vyapar, myBillBook and Swipe all describe reminders in their own materials.
Day 7: Give your CA the first export and ask for comments.
Who should not use a mobile-first app
If you need multi-branch stock transfers, scheme-based pricing, batch and expiry, or heavy purchase workflows, a mobile app will start to feel cramped. Look instead at desktop-led or ERP products; our billing software category and inventory software category list those. Similarly, if your business is formally accounted with ledgers, cost centres and audit trails, a full accounting package such as TallyPrime is a better primary system, with a mobile app only for field billing.
If you already use Zoho Books, note it has its own mobile access. You may not need a separate app. See Zoho Books Mobile.
A practical tip for field staff: create a short list of your twenty most-billed items and your ten most frequent customers as favourites, so that a bill needs only a handful of taps. If the app you choose does not allow this, speed will suffer at exactly the moments you need it. Also agree a rule on rounding and on how to treat small discounts at the customer's request, because a field worker with no guidance will improvise, and improvisation shows up later as unexplained differences between sales and cash collected.
FAQs
Which is the best mobile billing app in India?
There is no universal winner. Vyapar and myBillBook are widely used for GST billing and stock, and Swipe is worth trying for quick invoicing. Test each on your own invoices.
