Unacademy

Unacademy is a Bengaluru-based online education company that runs live and recorded classes for competitive exam preparation in India, covering exams such as UPSC, JEE, NEET and banking. It also operates the Unacademy apps.

The company started in 2010 as a YouTube channel created by Gaurav Munjal and became a company in 2015. Sorting Hat Technologies Pvt Ltd is the legal entity. The group's businesses have included PrepLadder for medical exam preparation, Graphy, a platform that lets creators sell courses, and Airlearn, a language-learning app. Unacademy reports more than 50 million active learners and over 1,000 educators.

On 1 September 2026, TechCrunch reported that upGrad had completed its purchase of the Unacademy group, including PrepLadder, Graphy and Airlearn, for about $206 million. TechCrunch noted that the price was around 94% below Unacademy's peak valuation of $3.44 billion. According to the same report, Gaurav Munjal continues as Unacademy's CEO.

This site's catalog also lists CodeChef under this vendor. Unacademy acquired CodeChef from Directi in June 2020, but in 2023 it spun CodeChef out as an independent company, keeping a 30% stake and returning the remaining equity to CodeChef's team. CodeChef should therefore not be treated as an Unacademy product today. Unacademy's co-founders are Gaurav Munjal, Roman Saini and Hemesh Singh. Following the upGrad acquisition, learners and partners should check current subscription terms and any changes in the product line-up on Unacademy's official channels.
