Quick answer: The cleanest way to file GST returns is to let the same software that raises your invoices prepare GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. TallyPrime and Zoho Books both say you can file from inside the product. ClearTax GST is a dedicated filing and reconciliation platform that connects to ERPs such as Tally and Zoho, which suits businesses with several GSTINs or a CA team doing the filing.

The month-end scramble, and why it happens

Most late GST filings are not caused by a lack of knowledge. They are caused by data in the wrong place. Sales sit in a billing app, purchases in a folder of PDFs, and the accountant receives a spreadsheet on the 17th asking for the return by the 20th. Mismatches then surface late: an invoice with a wrong GSTIN, a credit note missed, an HSN code left blank.

The fix is structural. If your billing data is already clean, with party GSTINs, HSN/SAC codes, place of supply and tax rates stored at the time of invoicing, the return becomes a report you review, not a document you build. This is the real promise of filing "straight from billing data".

Three routes from billing data to a return

Route 1: file from the accounting package. TallyPrime's own site describes GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B being uploaded and filed directly from the software, e-invoicing with a QR code and IRN, e-way bills, and GSTR-2A/2B reconciliation. It describes a connected GST solution where you can file, sign and reconcile without going to the GST portal. Zoho Books lists GST filing with automatic CGST, SGST and IGST calculation, e-invoicing with IRN validation and e-way bills. Its sibling product Zoho Invoice says it enables direct GSTR-1 filing through API access to the GSTN portal and lets you export GSTR-3B reports.

Route 2: hand data to a filing platform. ClearTax GST states that it handles returns from GSTR-1 through GSTR-9C, including GSTR-4 and GSTR-6, with multi-GSTIN management from one dashboard. It lists compatibility with SAP, Microsoft, Tally and Zoho, plus GSTR-2B versus 3B comparison reports. ClearTax makes performance claims such as faster filing cycles; treat those as marketing and ask for a trial on your own data.

Route 3: export a file and upload. Many billing apps give you a JSON or Excel output. For example, Swipe lists GSTR JSON export, and myBillBook lists GSTR-1, GSTR-2 and GSTR-3B report generation. You then upload through the GST portal yourself or via your CA. This is the cheapest route, and the most manual.

What each product costs, per the vendor

Prices change, so read the vendor page before deciding. Per the vendors' own pricing information (checked October 2026):

  • TallyPrime Silver (single user): from ₹750 for one month, ₹8,100 for 12 months, or ₹22,500 for a lifetime licence, all plus 18% GST. TallyPrime Gold (multi-user): ₹24,300 for 12 months or ₹67,500 lifetime, plus 18% GST.
  • Zoho Books: a free plan for businesses under ₹25 lakh annual revenue; Standard at ₹749 per month billed annually for up to 3 users and described as covering GST filing; Professional at ₹1,499 per month billed annually for 5 users. Higher tiers add payroll, warehouse features and analytics.
  • ClearTax GST: pricing is not published on the vendor's website; it is quoted by the vendor.

A practical monthly routine

Whatever tool you choose, the rhythm is the same. Here is a simple one that works.

By the 5th: Close the previous month's sales. Check that every invoice has a customer GSTIN where required, an HSN/SAC code and the right tax rate. Most tools have an exceptions or validation report; use it.

By the 8th: Enter or import purchases. Reconcile them against what your suppliers have reported, so you claim input tax credit only on matched invoices. TallyPrime lists GSTR-2A/2B reconciliation, and ClearTax lists reconciliation as a core feature.

By the 10th: Review the draft GSTR-1. Compare totals with your books. Fix mismatches in the source data, not in the return.

Before the due date: Prepare GSTR-3B, review liability and ITC, and pay. Keep a copy of every filed acknowledgement.

The government's GST portal has its own help topics on how to file returns and a Returns Offline Tool; for statutory due dates, always check the GST portal itself instead of an article.

Common mismatches and how to prevent them

Whichever route you take, the same handful of errors cause most pain at filing time, and nearly all of them start at invoice entry.

  • Missing or wrong party GSTIN. A mistyped GSTIN means the buyer cannot match your invoice. Validate on entry where the software offers it, and keep a clean party master.
  • Blank HSN/SAC. Set the code once on the item and let it flow into every invoice.
  • Place of supply errors. These flip a bill between CGST/SGST and IGST. Check the state on the customer record, not just on the invoice.
  • Credit notes entered late. If a return is recorded after the month is closed, your return and your books drift apart. Record it in the month it happens.
  • Purchases booked from memory. Always enter purchases against the supplier's actual invoice, so reconciliation has something to match.

A useful habit is a monthly exceptions review: before preparing any return, run whatever validation or exception report your tool provides, and clear it to zero. A tool that offers 200-plus automatic checks is helpful, but only if somebody reads the result. The discipline is yours; the software only shows the problems sooner.

What to test before you buy

  • Does it connect to the GST portal directly or via export? The two have different effort levels.
  • Can your CA log in? A role for your accountant avoids passing files by WhatsApp.
  • What happens with amendments and credit notes? Ask for a demo, not a feature list.
  • How does it handle e-invoicing? If your turnover requires it, you need IRN generation in the same flow. Check the current threshold on the GST portal.
  • Support during filing week. The week of the 20th is when support matters most.

Who this is not for

If you issue fewer than twenty invoices a month and your CA already files, buying a connected filing tool may not pay back. Hand your CA a clean export and spend nothing extra. Equally, a heavy multi-GSTIN platform is overkill for a single-shop trader. And no software removes the need for someone to review the numbers; connected filing makes mistakes visible faster, but you still sign off.

Keep a filing log. Note the date each return was filed, who reviewed it, and where the acknowledgement is saved. When a notice arrives months later, this one page saves hours of searching.

FAQs

Can I file GST returns directly from billing software?

Some products say so. TallyPrime describes uploading and filing GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B directly, and Zoho Invoice describes direct GSTR-1 filing through API access. Check that your plan includes it.

Which is better for GST filing, Tally or Zoho Books?

Tally suits businesses already working in Tally and wanting a desktop-led workflow; Zoho Books suits those preferring cloud access and a client portal. Try both with a month of your own data.

Is ClearTax GST a billing software?

No. Per its site it is a GST compliance platform for returns and reconciliation that takes data from ERPs such as Tally and Zoho.

How do I reconcile GSTR-2B with my purchases?

Use a tool that matches supplier-reported invoices to your purchase entries. TallyPrime and ClearTax both list reconciliation features.

Do I still need a CA if my software files returns?

Most businesses still use a CA for review, notices and annual returns. Software reduces data entry; it does not replace professional judgment.
