Software covered in this blog

Choose TallyPrime if your accountant or CA already works in Tally, you want a desktop product you can buy outright, and you need strong inventory and statutory reporting on a local network. Choose Zoho Books if your team is spread across locations, you want cloud access, bank feeds and automation, and you are comfortable paying a monthly or annual subscription. Choose BUSY if you are a trader, distributor or small manufacturer who wants deep inventory and billing features at a lower entry price, with the option of a perpetual licence. All three support Indian GST workflows. The right choice depends less on features than on where your data should live, who needs access, and how you prefer to pay.

Executive summary

  • Pricing models are fundamentally different. TallyPrime sells perpetual licences (Silver ₹22,500, Gold ₹67,500, plus 18% GST) alongside monthly and annual rentals (Tally). Zoho Books is subscription-only, from a free plan up to ₹7,999 a month billed annually (Zoho Books pricing). BUSY offers both subscription (MAGIC) and perpetual (BUSY 21) plans (BUSY pricing).
  • User count drives cost more than features. Tally Gold is the multi-user edition. Zoho Books includes 3 to 25 users depending on plan and charges ₹150 per extra user per month on annual billing.
  • E-invoicing is now a mid-market issue. CBIC Notification 10/2023 extended e-invoicing to businesses with aggregate turnover above ₹5 crore from 1 August 2023 (GST Council). Zoho says e-invoicing is available in all paid Zoho Books plans from Standard (Zoho Books e-invoicing).
  • The 30-day e-invoice reporting window raises the stakes on software. Since 1 April 2025, businesses with AATO of ₹10 crore and above must report e-invoices to the IRP within 30 days of the invoice date (GSTN e-invoice portal).
  • Over three years, cloud is not automatically cheaper. In our illustrative model, a 3-user business pays about ₹26,964 plus GST for Zoho Books Standard over three years, compared with ₹67,500 plus GST once for a Tally Gold perpetual licence. The Tally figure excludes renewal of Tally Software Services after the included period.

Market context

India's accounting software decision sits inside a tax system that has become more digital every year. Three official changes shape what an SME needs from its books.

E-invoicing thresholds. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs lowered the e-invoicing threshold to aggregate turnover above ₹5 crore, effective 1 August 2023, through Notification 10/2023–Central Tax dated 10 May 2023 (GST Council). A business crossing that line must generate an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) through the Invoice Registration Portal for B2B invoices. Doing that manually on a portal for hundreds of invoices a month is impractical, so accounting software with direct IRP integration becomes a requirement rather than a convenience.

Reporting deadlines. GSTN's advisory states that taxpayers with AATO of ₹10 crore and above must report e-invoices within 30 days of the invoice date from 1 April 2025. The IRP rejects late submissions and will not generate an IRN. The rule covers invoices, credit notes and debit notes (GSTN e-invoice portal). If your accounting software queues invoices for batch upload, a missed batch can now become a lost IRN.

Vendor responses. Tally's own GST guidance describes e-invoicing through business software that "seamlessly connects to the IRP system via GSP, and automatically prints the QR code and IRN on the invoice" (Tally e-invoice guide). Zoho states that Zoho Books uploads invoices directly to the IRP, receives the IRN and QR code, and supports e-way bill generation with Zoho registered as the GSP (Zoho Books e-invoicing).

We did not find an official, primary-source figure for each vendor's Indian market share, so we do not quote one. Qualitatively, Tally is widely taught and used by practising accountants, which matters because your CA's familiarity affects month-end cost. Zoho Books has grown with cloud-first businesses. BUSY has a following among traders and distributors who need inventory depth.

Notes from the pricing pages:

  • Tally states that Tally Software Services (TSS) is included with the Gold perpetual licence and with annual rental plans, and that rental plans auto-renew until cancelled.
  • Zoho Books annual invoice limits rise by plan: 5,000 on Standard, 10,000 on Professional, 25,000 on Premium and 100,000 on Elite and Ultimate. Extra users cost ₹180 a month, or ₹150 a month billed annually.
  • BUSY's MAGIC plans include "Mobile App Lite free for the first 360 days". BUSY 21 Basic includes "1 Mobile App for 1st Year @ No Cost".

How the three differ in practice

TallyPrime is strongest where speed of data entry, keyboard-driven workflows and familiarity matter. Most Indian accountants can use it immediately, which cuts training and CA coordination time. Remote access needs either the Cloud Access add-on or third-party hosting. Tally-hosting providers such as Tally on Cloud by HostBooks exist for businesses that want Tally without running a local server.

Zoho Books is strongest where multiple people need access from different places, where bank feeds and automation save time, and where you want to connect other Zoho apps or payment gateways. The trade-off is ongoing subscription cost and plan limits on invoices and users.

BUSY is strongest for inventory-heavy traders and distributors that want features such as batch and godown handling without paying Tally Gold prices. It offers both subscription and perpetual routes, which suits businesses that want to test on a subscription before committing.

If your needs are mainly billing rather than full accounting, Vyapar, myBillBook and Marg ERP are also worth a look. Compare them in our billing software for small business guide.

Total cost of ownership

Illustrative model — assumptions stated. The figures below apply published list prices to a hypothetical business. They are not real customer quotes or invoices.

Assumptions

  • A trading business with 3 users who need simultaneous access
  • Three-year horizon
  • Prices exclude 18% GST. Tally and BUSY state that GST is extra, and Zoho states its prices exclude GST
  • No hosting, hardware, implementation partner or training costs included
  • Discounts are applied only where the vendor page shows them
  • For Tally, renewal of TSS after the included period is not priced because we did not capture a published renewal figure. Treat it as an extra cost to obtain from Tally or a partner
OptionYear 1Year 2Year 33-year total (ex-GST)
TallyPrime Gold, perpetual₹67,500TSS renewal (not captured)TSS renewal (not captured)₹67,500 + TSS renewals
TallyPrime Gold, 12-month rental at discounted list price₹24,300₹24,300₹24,300₹72,900 (assumes the 10% discount applies each year)
Zoho Books Standard, annual billing (3 users)₹8,988₹8,988₹8,988₹26,964
Zoho Books Professional, annual billing (5 users, room to grow)₹17,988₹17,988₹17,988₹53,964
BUSY MAGIC SMART₹8,000₹8,000₹8,000₹24,000 (confirm user count for your plan)
BUSY 21 Standard, perpetual₹16,500Not capturedNot captured₹16,500 + any renewals

What the model shows

  • Zoho Books Standard costs less over three years than Tally Gold at list prices, but only while you stay within 3 users and 5,000 invoices a year. Adding two more users on Standard at ₹150 a month each adds ₹10,800 over three years.
  • Tally Gold perpetual becomes more attractive beyond three years, or when you add more users, provided you account for TSS renewals.
  • BUSY's entry prices are the lowest here. Before comparing like for like, confirm how many users and companies each plan includes.

Hidden costs to add in your own model: Tally hosting or cloud access, data migration, a Tally partner's customisation fees, extra Zoho add-ons (locations, autoscans), and staff time spent learning a new interface.

Questions to ask in every demo

Use the same script with all three vendors so the answers are comparable:

  1. Show me an invoice becoming an e-invoice. Create a B2B invoice, generate the IRN, cancel it, and raise a credit note against it.
  2. Show me two people working at once. One user billing while another posts a purchase, from different locations.
  3. Show me month-end. Bank reconciliation for 50 lines, then GST reports for the month.
  4. Show me the exit. Export the ledger, item master and outstanding balances to Excel.
  5. Show me the renewal. Which screen or email tells me the renewal date and price, and what happens if I do not renew?

A vendor that cannot demonstrate all five in one session is telling you something about day-to-day use.

Implementation roadmap

Week 1: Decide the model

  • List users, locations and who needs remote access.
  • Confirm with your CA which software they can work with.
  • Check whether you are, or will soon be, above the ₹5 crore e-invoicing threshold.

Weeks 2–3: Trial and data mapping

  • Run a free trial or the free plan with real sample data: ten sales invoices, five purchases, one stock transfer, one credit note.
  • Map your chart of accounts, tax ledgers, item master and party master.
  • Test e-invoice generation in the sandbox or trial where possible.

Weeks 3–5: Migration

  • Choose a clean cut-over date, ideally the start of a month or quarter.
  • Migrate opening balances, outstanding receivables and payables, and stock.
  • Reconcile trial balance totals between old and new systems before going live.

Weeks 5–6: Go-live and parallel run

  • Run both systems for one month-end close if staff capacity allows.
  • File one GST return cycle from the new system with your CA reviewing.

Weeks 7–8: Optimise

  • Set up bank reconciliation rules, recurring entries and user permissions.
  • Connect payment gateways, e-commerce or POS where needed.

Risks and compliance checklist

  • E-invoicing readiness. If aggregate turnover exceeds ₹5 crore, confirm your software can generate IRNs (GST Council).
  • 30-day reporting rule. If AATO is ₹10 crore or more, confirm invoices reach the IRP within 30 days, including credit and debit notes (GSTN).
  • Plan limits. Check annual invoice and bill limits on subscription plans against your volumes.
  • Auto-renewal terms. Tally notes that rental plans auto-renew until cancelled. Diarise renewal dates for all subscriptions.
  • Backups. For desktop installations, schedule off-site backups. For cloud, confirm export options.
  • User permissions. Restrict who can alter or delete posted vouchers.
  • Audit trail. Confirm the software keeps an edit log that your auditor can review.
  • Data exit. Test exporting ledgers and masters before you commit.
  • CA access. Decide whether your CA gets a user licence, an accountant seat, or periodic data exports.

FAQs

Which is better for a small business in India, Tally or Zoho Books?

It depends on access and cost preference. TallyPrime suits businesses whose accountants know Tally and who want a perpetual desktop licence. Zoho Books suits teams that need cloud access, bank automation and a subscription. At list prices, Zoho Books Standard costs ₹749 a month billed annually for 3 users, while Tally Silver perpetual costs ₹22,500 plus GST for a single user.

What is the TallyPrime price in 2026?

Tally's official page lists TallyPrime Silver at ₹750 a month, ₹9,000 for 12 months or ₹22,500 perpetual, and Gold at ₹2,250 a month, ₹27,000 for 12 months or ₹67,500 perpetual, all plus 18% GST (Tally).

Is Zoho Books free?

Zoho Books has a free plan with 1 user plus 1 accountant, up to 1,000 invoices and 1,000 bills or expenses a year, bank reconciliation and GST reports. E-invoicing is available from the paid Standard plan upward (Zoho Books pricing).

How much does BUSY accounting software cost?

BUSY's page lists MAGIC subscription plans from free (Express) to ₹50,000 per 360 days (POWER+), and BUSY 21 perpetual plans at ₹11,000, ₹16,500 and ₹22,000, with GST extra (BUSY).

Can Tally generate e-invoices?

Yes. Tally's GST guidance describes generating e-invoices through software that connects to the IRP via a GSP and prints the IRN and QR code on the invoice (Tally).

Do I need e-invoicing software if my turnover is below ₹5 crore?

E-invoicing applies to taxpayers whose aggregate turnover exceeds ₹5 crore, following Notification 10/2023–Central Tax. Below that level it is not mandatory, but choosing software that supports it avoids a migration if you grow past the threshold.

Is it hard to move from Tally to Zoho Books?

Migration is manageable if you pick a clean cut-over date and migrate masters, opening balances and outstanding items rather than every historical voucher. Keep your Tally data archived for audits and reconcile trial balance totals before going live.
