LMS versus online class software
They solve different problems and are often bought as one. An LMS is asynchronous: courses, units, materials, assignments, submissions, quizzes, grades and progress. Online class software is synchronous: live video, screen share, breakout rooms, recording. Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams for Education blur the line and are free or bundled with education tenants, which is why they are the default for most Indian schools. Dedicated LMS products earn their place when you need structured curricula, proctored assessment, certificates or selling courses.

Do LMS assessment marks flow into internal assessment for report cards? A product that answers no to all three is a separate system, and should be priced as one.
Higher education has different requirements
Colleges and universities running formal programmes usually need an LMS that maps to courses and credits, supports outcome-based education mapping (course outcomes to programme outcomes), handles proctored online examinations, and produces data for accreditation. Moodle and Canvas are the established choices; Moodle is free to licence but needs hosting and administration, which is a real cost that is often underestimated.

Is Moodle free?+
Moodle is open source and free to licence, but running it is not free: you pay for hosting, administration, upgrades, plugin maintenance and support. Do we need both an LMS and video conferencing?+
