What patient management software covers

Patient management software is the record-keeping and flow layer for patients. It creates a unique patient ID, captures demographics and contact details, stores consents and documents, and tracks every visit, appointment, bill and report against that ID. It also manages flow on the day: token or queue status, which counter or doctor the patient goes to next, and what's still pending. In many products it is a module inside a clinic or hospital system rather than a standalone app, so check how well it links to your EMR and billing.

ABHA and scan-and-share in India

Under ABDM, patients can hold an ABHA number and share their profile with a registered health facility, which can shorten registration. ABDM's official site describes a scan-and-share approach in which the patient scans a QR code at the facility to share their details. If you want this at your front desk, ask vendors whether their ABDM integration supports it, whether your facility must first be listed on the Health Facility Registry, and how records created during the visit are linked back to the patient's ABHA.

Patient data management and privacy

Patient records are sensitive personal data. Your software should offer role-based access, so a receptionist can't read clinical notes, along with audit logs of who viewed or changed a record, encrypted storage and transfer, regular backups and a clear data-retention and export policy. Ask cloud vendors where data is hosted and what their breach-response process is. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 also applies to organisations that process personal data, so talk to your own adviser about what it means for your facility.
