Quick answer: To reduce AWS hosting costs, first see what you pay for with AWS Cost Explorer and cost allocation tags, then remove idle resources, move steady workloads onto Savings Plans, and tier your storage. AWS says Compute Savings Plans cut costs by up to 66% and EC2 Instance Savings Plans by up to 72% against On-Demand. Small sites can move to AWS Lightsail, whose bundles with a public IPv4 address start at $5 a month. Third-party tools such as Harness and Flexera One add automation across clouds.

How we researched this: We read AWS's own pages for Cost Management, Budgets, Savings Plans, Compute Optimizer, Spot, Graviton, S3, EBS, VPC, Lightsail, Support and Free Tier, the AWS India billing documentation, and the vendor pages of Harness and Flexera One. All prices are as checked in October 2026 and are in US dollars, as AWS publishes them.

Read the bill before touching a single server

Most overspend is not one big mistake. It is dozens of small resources nobody owns: a test database left running, a volume that outlived its server, an IP address nobody uses. So the first job is visibility, and AWS gives you several free-to-start tools for it.

Amazon Web Services describes AWS Cost Explorer as a way to visualise, understand and manage costs over time, with filtering by service, Region and account. When you enable it, AWS prepares the current month and the last 12 months of data and forecasts the next 12 months. Cost Explorer's forecast can look up to 18 months ahead at monthly granularity and 3 months at daily granularity, per AWS's cost management overview. Its data refreshes at least once every 24 hours.

Then tag. AWS documents two kinds of cost allocation tags, AWS-generated and user-defined, and both must be activated separately in the Billing and Cost Management console before they appear in Cost Explorer or the cost allocation report. Without tags, a Pune company running three products in one account sees "EC2: Rs big number"; with a product and a team tag, it sees which product costs what. Pick three tags (product, environment, owner) and make them mandatory in your deployment template.

Finally, set alarms. AWS says monitoring and notifications on budgets are free; budget actions are free for your first two action-enabled budgets each month, and each additional one costs $0.10 per day. A budget at 80% of last month's bill that emails the engineering lead is the cheapest insurance you can buy.

India-specific billing facts

If your AWS account was created with an Indian contact and billing address, AWS's documentation says your agreement is with Amazon Web Services India Private Limited, which manages your billing and lists the invoice total in rupees. AWS's India Marketplace FAQ, which says payments work "similar to your AWS India cloud purchases", adds that service pricing continues to be published in US dollars, exclusive of GST, with amounts computed in dollars and converted to INR for billing, and that you can pay by AMEX, MasterCard, RuPay or Visa cards; it states NetBanking and UPI payment methods are currently not available. The same FAQ says you must enter your GSTIN on the Tax Settings page of the billing console to receive tax invoices that can be used to claim input tax credit, and that the tax settings of the account are applied to Marketplace invoices too. Our explainer on claiming GST input credit on SaaS subscriptions covers the books side, and GST on foreign SaaS applies if some of your tools are billed from outside India.

Quick wins that need no commitment

These changes are reversible, so do them first.

LeakWhat AWS's own pages sayTypical fix
Idle public IPv4 addressesBoth in-use and idle public IPv4 addresses cost $0.005 per hourRelease unused Elastic IPs; three idle addresses cost about $10.80 a month ($0.005 x 24 x 30 x 3)
NAT gateway traffic to S3NAT gateways charge per hour plus per GB processed; AWS's example (US East, Ohio) is $0.045 per hour and $0.045 per GBUse a gateway VPC endpoint for S3, which has no hourly or data processing charge
Dev and test servers running at nightInstance Scheduler on AWS starts and stops EC2, Auto Scaling groups and RDS on schedules you define using tags and LambdaStop non-production overnight and on Sundays
Old general-purpose SSD volumesgp3 volumes provide up to 20% lower price per GB than gp2Migrate volumes from gp2 to gp3
Cold files in S3 StandardS3 Intelligent-Tiering moves objects not accessed for 30 days to an Infrequent Access tier that saves up to 40%, with no retrieval charges; objects under 128 KB are not auto-tieredSwitch backups, logs and user uploads to Intelligent-Tiering

Two details matter here. NAT charges are easy to miss because the hourly fee looks small while the per-GB charge scales with traffic, and standard data transfer charges still apply on top. And Intelligent-Tiering carries a small monthly monitoring and automation fee, so it suits data with unpredictable access rather than files you know are cold. See Amazon S3 for storage options and our guide to backup and disaster recovery for Indian SMEs before you shrink retention periods.

Picture a Coimbatore textile exporter whose ERP runs on Amazon RDS plus a few servers. Its test copy of the ERP runs 24 hours a day although the accounts team uses it only on weekdays from 9 to 7. A schedule that stops the test stack outside those hours cuts it from 168 running hours a week to 50, about 30%, without touching production. That is the typical shape of a first-month saving: schedules and clean-up, not architecture.

Commit only after the waste is gone

Committing to a discount before clearing waste locks the waste in. Once your usage is steady, AWS offers several levers.

Savings Plans. AWS defines Savings Plans as a pricing model offering lower prices than On-Demand in exchange for a usage commitment measured in dollars per hour for a one- or three-year term. It offers four types. Compute Savings Plans give the most flexibility with savings up to 66%, applying to EC2 regardless of instance family, size, Region, OS or tenancy, and also to Fargate and Lambda. EC2 Instance Savings Plans give the lowest prices, up to 72%, in exchange for committing to an instance family in a Region. Database Savings Plans cover Amazon Aurora, RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache and others, with a 1-year term. SageMaker Savings Plans cover SageMaker usage. Three payment options exist (No Upfront, Partial Upfront, All Upfront), with the exception that Database Savings Plans offer one. The recommendations in the Billing console use your historical usage, and a Savings Plans Purchase Analyzer lets you test scenarios first. Plans bought with an hourly commitment of $100 or less can be returned within 7 days in the same calendar month, which gives a small safety net if you commit too much.

A sensible rule: commit to roughly the amount you have used at the lowest point of the last few months, not the average. Anything above that line is better left On-Demand until you are sure.

Spot Instances. AWS says Spot capacity is available at up to a 90% discount compared with On-Demand and suits stateless, fault-tolerant or flexible work such as CI/CD, containerised workloads, web servers and test and development. Do not put your primary database on it.

Graviton. AWS says Graviton-based instances cost up to 20% less than comparable x86-based EC2 instances. The catch is software compatibility: your build must run on Arm. Test it on staging before moving production, and see Amazon EKS if you run containers.

Right-sizing. AWS Compute Optimizer detects idle resources and recommends resources using machine learning on CloudWatch metrics from the last 14 days or 32 days; AWS states there is no additional charge for it. An optional enhanced metrics feature looks back up to three months and costs $0.0003360215 per resource per hour, which works out to roughly $0.24 per resource per month, useful for workloads with quarterly peaks. Cost Optimization Hub consolidates 18 types of recommendations (rightsizing, Graviton migration, idle resources and Savings Plans or Reserved Instance purchases) into one dashboard.

Support plan. AWS says Basic Support is included. The paid Business Support+ plan is the greater of $29 a month per account or 9% of monthly AWS charges up to $10K, with lower percentage tiers above that. If your organisation has many small accounts, the per-account minimum multiplies: six accounts is at least $174 a month. Check whether you need paid support in each one.

AWS bill reduction software: native tools versus third-party SaaS

The built-in tools are enough for a single-account company. Cloud cost management and optimisation SaaS makes sense when you run several clouds, many Kubernetes clusters, or need showback by team.

ToolWhat its own page saysBest fit
AWS Cost Explorer, Budgets, Cost Anomaly DetectionVisualise, forecast, alert; Anomaly Detection uses machine learning to identify anomalous spend and root causesOne or two AWS accounts
AWS Compute Optimizer and Cost Optimization HubRightsizing, idle resource and purchase recommendationsEngineers who will act on recommendations
Harness cloud costsLists AutoStopping for idle workloads, automated Reserved Instance and Savings Plan coverage, Kubernetes cluster rightsizing, budget alerts at 50%, 75%, 90% and 100%, anomaly detection, and chargeback and showback aligned to the FinOps FOCUS specificationTeams on Kubernetes or several clouds who want automation
Flexera OneDescribes a platform for IT visibility, cost optimisation and risk management across cloud, SaaS and on-premises, with FinOps that "autonomously optimizes cloud workloads and commitment discounts"Larger organisations that also need SaaS and licence control

Neither vendor's page shows a cloud cost price we could read, so ask each for a quote. Check that any third-party tool gets read-only access to billing data at first. A tool that "automatically" stops resources needs a staging period where it only recommends.

If the SaaS subscriptions in your company are growing as fast as the cloud bill, apply the same discipline there with our guide to SaaS spend and shadow IT tools, and for monitoring costs see observability tools and Datadog alternatives.

When AWS is bigger than the job

An Ahmedabad D2C brand with one WordPress or Node storefront and a few thousand daily visitors does not need a tangle of EC2, load balancers and NAT. AWS Lightsail bundles memory, vCPU, SSD storage and a data transfer allowance into one monthly price. On AWS's Lightsail pricing page, the Linux/Unix general-purpose bundles with a public IPv4 address start at $5 a month (0.5 GB memory, 20 GB SSD, 1 TB transfer) and the $12 bundle has 2 GB memory, 60 GB SSD and 3 TB transfer. One India-specific note from the same page: plans in the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region include half the data transfer allowances listed in the bundles. That allowance matters for image-heavy stores, so compute your monthly traffic first, and consider Amazon CloudFront for static assets.

Other hosts are worth a quote if your workload is simple: DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Vultr, and the Indian providers covered in our guide to MeitY-empanelled cloud providers. Our comparison of VPS and cloud hosting in India and the web hosting category list more. Compare on the total, including data transfer, backups and support, and keep an exit plan: migrating databases is the expensive part.

Startups should also check credits before paying anything. AWS says new Free Tier accounts get $100 in credits immediately and can earn up to $100 more, up to $200 over 6 months, on a Free plan that closes on its own after 6 months or when credits run out unless you upgrade to a Paid plan. AWS Activate and other programmes are covered in our guide to startup credits in India.

Do you need an AWS cloud deployment provider in Pune?

Many Indian SMEs use a local partner to run AWS for them. AWS runs a Partner Network that its site describes as a way to collaborate with AWS partners, and AWS has Regions in Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2) according to its Regions documentation, so a Pune team has an in-country option for latency. A partner is useful when you have no in-house DevOps engineer, are migrating from on-premises servers, or want someone accountable for uptime. Before signing, ask five questions:

  1. Will the AWS account be in your name, with you as root owner? (It should be.)
  2. Do you get read access to Cost Explorer and the monthly invoice from AWS, not just the partner's bill?
  3. Is there a monthly cost review included, and who acts on the recommendations?
  4. How are Savings Plans purchased, and in whose account?
  5. What happens at exit: who hands over infrastructure-as-code, runbooks and backups?

If the answer to the first two is "no", you will not be able to audit what you are paying for. For architecture choices on databases and storage, our guide to database hosting in India is a useful companion, and Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure are the other big clouds to get a comparison quote from.

A 30-day plan, and who should skip it

  • Days 1 to 3: enable Cost Explorer, create the three mandatory tags, activate them, set a monthly budget with email alerts, and download last month's invoice.
  • Days 4 to 10: release idle IP addresses, delete unattached volumes after snapshotting them, add an S3 gateway endpoint, migrate gp2 to gp3 on non-critical volumes, and schedule non-production shutdowns.
  • Days 11 to 20: review Compute Optimizer and Cost Optimization Hub recommendations, right-size the top five services by spend, and trial Graviton on one stateless service.
  • Days 21 to 30: with a clean baseline, model a Savings Plan in the Purchase Analyzer and commit to the lowest-usage level only. Re-run the Cost Explorer report and write down the saving.

Who should skip this plan? A company with a small monthly AWS bill and no engineers: your time is better spent on the revenue side, and a Lightsail plan or a managed host will remove the problem instead of optimising it. Browse the cloud platforms category and the IT management category if you are still choosing tools.

FAQs

How can I reduce my AWS bill quickly?

Start with idle resources: release unused public IPv4 addresses ($0.005 per hour each), stop non-production instances out of hours with Instance Scheduler on AWS, and review Compute Optimizer recommendations (no additional charge, per AWS). These changes do not require long-term commitments.

Are Savings Plans worth it for a small Indian business?

Yes, if your usage is steady. AWS says Compute Savings Plans reduce costs by up to 66% and EC2 Instance Savings Plans by up to 72%. Commit only to your lowest steady level, and remember the commitment is in dollars per hour for one or three years.

Does AWS bill Indian companies in rupees?

AWS's documentation says that if you choose India for your contact and billing address, your agreement is with Amazon Web Services India Private Limited and the invoice total is in rupees. Prices are published in US dollars and converted for billing. Enter your GSTIN in Tax Settings to receive invoices usable for input tax credit.

What is the best cloud cost management and optimization SaaS?

It depends on your setup. For a single AWS account, AWS's own Cost Explorer, Budgets and Compute Optimizer are enough. For multi-cloud or Kubernetes-heavy teams, tools like Harness and Flexera One offer automation and showback, with pricing on request.

Is AWS Lightsail cheaper than EC2 for a small website?

For a simple site, Lightsail's bundled plans (from $5 a month for a bundle with a public IPv4 address) are easier to budget, because memory, storage and transfer are included. Mumbai-region plans include half the data transfer shown in the bundle, so check your traffic before choosing.
