Yes under the IT Act 2000 for most documents, with Aadhaar eSign and DSC carrying the highest evidentiary value. Wills, property transfers and some negotiable instruments are excluded.
India buyer's guide
E-signature software lets a business send a contract, offer letter, vendor agreement or loan document for signing online, track who has signed and store the completed file with an audit trail. In India the key question is which kind of signature a document needs: an Aadhaar-based eSign or a digital signature certificate recognised under the Information Technology Act, or a simpler electronic signature that works for many routine commercial agreements.
Good tools make that choice easy, support Aadhaar eSign and DSC tokens where required, handle stamp duty workflows for agreements that need e-stamping, and produce a tamper-evident audit trail with timestamps and signer details. Weak ones offer only a drawn signature image, send documents from unfamiliar addresses that land in spam, and make it hard to route one agreement through several signers in the right order.
The best e-signature software for an Indian business is the one that matches the legal weight your documents need. Confirm support for Aadhaar-based eSign through a licensed provider, DSC signing with USB tokens, and simple electronic signatures for everyday approvals. Then check signing order, reminders, bulk sends, templates, audit trail quality, API access and whether signers can complete everything on a phone without creating an account.

Small businesses mostly sign client proposals, rental agreements, NDAs and offer letters. They need reusable templates, sequential signers, automatic reminders and a clean completion certificate, all without per-signer charges ballooning. Aadhaar eSign on a pay-per-use basis is handy for occasional documents that need it. A mobile-friendly signing page matters because many counterparties will sign on WhatsApp-forwarded links from their phones.
E-signature tools built for India usually integrate Aadhaar OTP and biometric eSign, support DSC tokens for company filings and tenders, and offer e-stamping so stamp duty can be paid digitally for eligible documents in participating states. They often allow signing links over SMS and WhatsApp as well as email, bill in rupees with GST, and understand workflows such as loan agreements, employee onboarding and vendor KYC common in Indian companies.

App Advisor carries no user ratings, so read outside reviews critically and verify what matters in a trial. If a review mentions Aadhaar eSign failures, test OTP delivery with several signers. If it praises the audit trail, download a completion certificate and see what details it records. Check the date of the review, as Aadhaar eSign providers and stamping integrations change over time. How App Advisor rates software.
Put these rows in an e-signature comparison: types of signature supported (simple electronic, Aadhaar eSign, DSC), e-stamping availability by state, signing order and parallel signing, bulk send, templates and fields, delivery channels, audit trail content, document retention, integrations with CRM, HRMS and storage, API and webhooks, data residency, and per-envelope or per-signature limits on each plan.
E-signature pricing in India often combines a per-user monthly plan with limits on the number of documents or envelopes sent, while Aadhaar eSign is commonly charged per signature as a usage fee. E-stamping is billed separately with the stamp duty passed through. API plans may be priced by volume of documents. Understand which of these apply before comparing headline plan prices.
Total cost depends on how many documents you send, how many need Aadhaar eSign, whether e-stamping is used and how many senders need seats. Overage charges for envelopes beyond your plan limit can surprise growing teams. Annual plans are cheaper per seat but often commit you to a document quota. Add GST at 18% on the software invoice, and budget for API integration work if signing starts from your own app.
Free e-signature plans usually allow only a few documents a month, a single sender, simple electronic signatures only, no templates or bulk send, and limited audit detail. Aadhaar eSign and DSC signing are rarely included for free because they carry per-signature costs. A free plan helps you get the occasional NDA signed but not run HR onboarding or sales contracts at volume.
Trial lengths as each vendor states them are listed on the free e-signature software page.
Ask the vendor to explain which signature types are valid for which documents, how Aadhaar eSign is provided and which licensed service provider stands behind it, how e-stamping works in your state, how signer identity is verified, what the audit trail contains, where documents are stored, and how long they are retained after your subscription ends.
Startups sign founder agreements, employment contracts, ESOP letters, customer MSAs and investor documents. A tool with templates, sequential signing and Aadhaar eSign on demand covers most needs. If the product itself collects signatures from users, check the API early. Keep completed documents organised by counterparty so due diligence during fundraising is quick. Confirm that completion certificates are easy to hand to an investor's lawyer.
MSMEs often sign purchase orders, dealership agreements and rental or lease documents. Support for WhatsApp or SMS signing links, Aadhaar eSign for counterparties without email habits, and e-stamping for agreements that need stamp duty make a practical difference. A simple interface for the owner to approve documents from a phone matters more than advanced workflow features.
Manufacturers sign supplier contracts, quality agreements, dealer appointments and job-work documents. Look for multi-party signing orders across legal, procurement and plant heads, templates with fields that match your ERP data, DSC support for statutory filings, and storage linked to your document management system so signed contracts are easy to find during audits. Bulk sending of annual rate contracts to many suppliers is another practical test.
Retailers sign franchise agreements, store leases, vendor terms and staff onboarding forms across many locations. Bulk send for store staff documents, e-stamping for lease agreements, and mobile signing for store managers are useful. Central reporting on which franchisees or stores have pending documents helps head office close gaps before openings or audits. Check that franchisees in smaller towns can complete Aadhaar OTP signing on basic phones.
Agencies need quick sign-off on proposals, statements of work, change requests and freelancer agreements. Templates with pricing tables, reminders to slow clients, and signing that works on any phone speed things up. If you work with international clients, check whether signatures are recognised in their jurisdictions as well as in India. Retainer renewals benefit from templates that pre-fill last year's scope and fees.
E-signature subscriptions should come with a GST tax invoice carrying your GSTIN so you can claim input tax credit, and usage fees for Aadhaar eSign should be invoiced similarly. Stamp duty paid through e-stamping is a government levy, not a GST item. Some tools can digitally sign invoices with DSC, which is useful for businesses issuing signed tax invoices by email.
Look for alternatives when Aadhaar eSign success rates are poor, envelope quotas no longer fit, or your state's e-stamping is not supported. Before switching, bulk-download all completed documents with audit certificates, since these are your legal evidence. Check contract renewal dates and whether templates can be exported, and keep read access to the old account for a transition period.

Affiliate programs for e-signature tools generally pay on referred paid subscriptions and sometimes on API plans. Check whether usage fees like Aadhaar eSign count toward commission, the cookie duration, whether renewals pay out, and whether the vendor's claims about legal validity are ones you are comfortable repeating to your audience. Ask whether leads that sign up for a free plan and later buy eSign credits are still attributed to you.
Partners in this category include legal-tech consultants, HRMS and CRM vendors embedding signing, and system integrators connecting e-signature to core systems. Check API documentation quality, sandbox access for Aadhaar eSign testing, co-selling arrangements, training on the legal framework, and how support is split when a signing fails for a shared customer. Clarify whether the partner or the vendor holds the contract with the Aadhaar eSign service provider.
Resellers often bundle e-signature with document management, HR or accounting services. Examine white-label options, whether you can buy signature and stamping credits in bulk and resell them, how customer KYC is handled, contract terms around data ownership, and what happens to your customers' signed documents if your reseller agreement ends. Check too whether e-stamp purchases can be billed through your account or must go direct.
All verified programs across categories are in the software partner program directory. More India software guides: business software in India.
The Information Technology Act recognises electronic signatures, including Aadhaar-based eSign and digital signature certificates, for many documents. Some documents, such as negotiable instruments, powers of attorney, trusts, wills and property sale deeds, are excluded. For routine commercial contracts, take legal advice on which signature type suits your risk level.
Aadhaar eSign creates a signature through an OTP or biometric authentication with a licensed provider, without the signer owning a token. A DSC is a certificate usually stored on a USB token and issued to an individual or organisation. DSCs are common for MCA filings, tenders and tax filings, while Aadhaar eSign suits one-off signers.
In many states, e-stamping allows stamp duty to be paid digitally, and some e-signature tools integrate this into the signing workflow. Availability and rules differ by state and document type, so confirm that your state is supported before relying on it for leases or loan agreements.
Usually not. Signers receive a link by email, and some tools also send it by SMS or WhatsApp. They open the document, fill fields and sign. For Aadhaar eSign they complete OTP authentication with the mobile linked to their Aadhaar, so check that counterparties have that mobile number active.
Retention depends on your contracts and applicable laws, and many businesses keep agreements for the life of the contract plus several years. Check how long the platform stores completed documents on your plan and download copies with audit certificates into your own storage as a backup.
Many e-signature platforms provide APIs and embedded signing so users sign without leaving your website or app. Test the sandbox, including Aadhaar eSign flows if you need them, and check how webhooks report completion so your system can update records automatically.
