OpenAI

OpenAI is a San Francisco artificial intelligence company. It was founded in 2015 as a non-profit research lab, and its founders included Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever and Elon Musk. It develops the GPT family of large language models and the consumer product ChatGPT, and it sells access to its models to businesses and developers.

Its products for businesses include ChatGPT Business (formerly Team), ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Edu, the OpenAI API platform (GPT models, image generation, speech-to-text, text-to-speech and embeddings), the Codex coding agent, and tools for building AI agents. Indian companies use the API for customer support automation, content generation, coding help and document processing.

ChatGPT subscriptions are priced per user per month, and OpenAI has introduced India-specific pricing, including the lower-cost ChatGPT Go plan. API usage is billed per token at published rates. Enterprise agreements are negotiated with OpenAI's sales team. OpenAI opened its first India office in New Delhi in 2025, and in 2026 it announced plans for further offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru under an 'OpenAI for India' initiative.

Following its restructuring, OpenAI's commercial business sits in OpenAI Group PBC, a public benefit corporation controlled by the non-profit OpenAI Foundation. Microsoft, SoftBank and other investors, along with employees, hold equity. Sam Altman is CEO and Bret Taylor chairs the board. The company says its mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity, and it publishes its governance structure on its website. It releases model system cards and usage policies alongside new products.
