Paytm

Paytm is the consumer and merchant brand of One 97 Communications Limited, a listed Indian fintech company headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Vijay Shekhar Sharma founded the company in 2000, originally to provide mobile value-added services. Paytm, launched in 2010, grew from a mobile recharge site into a digital payments and financial services platform.

For businesses, Paytm offers QR code acceptance and the Soundbox payment-alert device, card POS terminals, an online payment gateway, payment links, settlement services and merchant lending distributed with partner lenders. Its business app lets merchants track payments. Consumers use Paytm for UPI payments, bill payments, travel bookings and investment products. Paytm's merchant products are aimed at a wide range of businesses, from small shops using QR codes and Soundbox devices to large online businesses using its payment gateway and APIs for checkout, subscriptions and payouts.

Paytm sells to merchants through a large field sales force and through its online platform. It charges transaction fees on payment gateway and card payments, and it rents devices such as Soundbox and POS terminals for a subscription fee. The company publishes some standard pricing on its business website, and larger merchants negotiate custom rates. Merchant lending and insurance are distributed on behalf of regulated partner institutions rather than from Paytm's own balance sheet.

One 97 Communications listed on Indian stock exchanges in November 2021, in what was then India's largest IPO. Its investor relations site carries its quarterly results, annual reports and exchange filings. In 2024 its associate Paytm Payments Bank came under Reserve Bank of India restrictions, and Paytm moved its merchant and UPI operations to partner banks. The company reports quarterly figures such as payment volume, merchant subscriptions and loan distribution in its investor presentations.
