Software covered in this blog

For Indian small businesses sending newsletters and promotions to a list of a few thousand contacts, Zoho Campaigns offers the most generous published free plan among the tools we checked (2,000 contacts and 6,000 emails per month), and Mailchimp publishes rupee prices for paid plans, currently discounted. Brevo suits businesses that want email plus SMS, WhatsApp and a light CRM in one account, though its prices loaded dynamically and were not readable on the page we accessed. Netcore is a sales-led option for high-volume consumer brands. Choose on list size, sending volume and whether you need automation and transactional email, because the cheapest plan at 500 contacts is rarely the cheapest at 50,000.

Executive summary

  • Zoho Campaigns has the largest free allowance we verified: up to 2,000 contacts, 6,000 emails per month and 5 users, according to its pricing page. Paid plans are priced by contact tier, starting at 500 contacts.
  • Mailchimp shows INR prices: Essentials from ₹770/month, Standard from ₹1,150/month and Premium from ₹23,000/month, all shown with a 50%-off-for-12-months promotion on its pricing page. Its free plan is limited to 250 contacts.
  • Brevo sells by email volume, not contacts. Its pricing page lists a free-forever plan, a Starter plan "from 5,000 emails per month" and a Professional plan from 150,000 emails per month; the price figures did not render on the page we could access.
  • Netcore is quote-based with pricing tied to monthly tracked users, per its pricing page.
  • Promotional pricing distorts comparisons. Model year-two costs at the regular rate, not the introductory rate.
  • Consent is mandatory, not optional. The DPDP Rules require a separate, clear consent notice; bought lists and pre-ticked boxes create legal and deliverability risk.

Market context

Email remains the lowest-cost owned channel for most businesses, but in India it competes for attention with WhatsApp and SMS. TRAI's July 2026 telecom subscription data reports 1,005.72 million broadband subscribers excluding M2M connections, most of them on mobile. Many recipients will read your email on a phone, so mobile-responsive templates, short subject lines and fast-loading images are baseline requirements.

Email is also where the DPDP framework is most visible to customers. The Government's DPDP Rules explainer confirms the Rules were notified on 14 November 2025, that individuals have the right to give or refuse consent and to withdraw it at any time, and that "any other violation" by a Data Fiduciary can attract penalties up to ₹50 crore. For email marketers, the practical translation is: collect consent with a clear notice, record it, honour unsubscribes immediately, and delete data you no longer need.

If you also send SMS, TRAI's TCCCPR Second Amendment Regulations, 2025 govern commercial messages through registered headers and content templates. Our SMS and OTP gateway guide explains DLT registration in detail.

We did not find a government statistic on the size of India's email marketing software market, so we do not quote one.

Contacts versus sends: why the pricing model matters

Email tools charge in two main ways. Contact-based tools such as Mailchimp and Zoho Campaigns charge by the size of your audience; you can usually email those contacts many times. Volume-based tools such as Brevo charge by the number of emails sent, and usually let you store large contact lists.

The right model depends on your ratio of sends to contacts:

  • A B2B company with 20,000 contacts that sends two newsletters a month sends 40,000 emails. A volume-based plan can be cheaper because many contacts are rarely emailed.
  • A D2C brand with 5,000 highly engaged buyers that sends daily offers sends around 150,000 emails a month. A contact-based plan can be cheaper because volume is high relative to audience size.

Before comparing quotes, calculate your contacts, your monthly sends, and how fast both are growing.

Where each tool fits

Zoho Campaigns is a strong fit for businesses already using Zoho CRM or Zoho Books, and for small organisations whose list is under the 2,000-contact free limit. Paid plans include unlimited emails, which rewards frequent senders.

Mailchimp is widely known and has extensive templates and integrations. Its rupee pricing makes budgeting easier for Indian buyers, but the displayed prices are promotional; confirm the regular rate that applies after 12 months.

Brevo combines email with SMS, WhatsApp and sales tools, and its volume-based model suits businesses with large lists that email infrequently. Because prices did not load on the page we accessed, request a written quote for your volume.

Netcore targets high-volume consumer brands that need deliverability support and cross-channel engagement, with commercial terms negotiated through sales.

Total cost of ownership

Illustrative model — assumptions stated.

  • A D2C brand with 2,000 contacts in year one, sending 4 campaigns a month (8,000 emails/month).
  • Mailchimp Standard at the displayed "from ₹1,150/month" promotional price for 12 months; the regular price was not displayed, so year two is shown as unknown.
  • Zoho Campaigns Free plan covers 2,000 contacts but only 6,000 emails per month, so this brand would exceed it and need a paid plan; the paid price was not displayed without selecting a tier, so it is shown as a quote.
  • Brevo Starter price not readable, shown as a quote.
  • Template design and automation setup: 20 hours at an assumed ₹800/hour for each tool.
Cost lineMailchimp StandardZoho CampaignsBrevo Starter
Year-one subscription12 × ₹1,150 = ₹13,800 (promotional; confirm contact tier)Paid Standard tier: select tier on siteQuote
Year-two subscriptionRegular price not displayedSame as year one unless tier changesQuote
Setup (20 h × ₹800)₹16,000₹16,000₹16,000
Year-one total₹29,800Tier price + ₹16,000Quote + ₹16,000

Two observations. First, the free plan that "fits" by contacts can fail on sends. Second, setup effort is comparable to a year's subscription for a small list, so choosing a tool you will not outgrow quickly saves money.

Implementation roadmap

Week 1: Audit and consent. Export all contacts, record their source and consent evidence, and remove contacts without a lawful basis. Write a clear consent notice for sign-up forms.

Week 2: Domain authentication. Configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC for your sending domain. Use a subdomain for marketing mail if your main domain carries important transactional email.

Week 3: Templates and forms. Build a mobile-first master template, a sign-up form with double opt-in, and a preference centre.

Week 4: Automation. Launch a welcome series and, for e-commerce, an abandoned cart flow.

Weeks 5–6: Warm-up and segmentation. Start sending to your most engaged contacts, then expand gradually. Segment by engagement and purchase history.

Weeks 7–8: Measurement. Connect conversion tracking, set up a monthly list-hygiene routine to suppress inactive contacts, and review deliverability reports.

Risks and compliance checklist

  • Clear consent (DPDP Act, 2023). Use a separate consent notice explaining the purpose; do not use pre-ticked boxes.
  • Withdrawal. Individuals may withdraw consent at any time; unsubscribe links must work instantly and suppress the address everywhere.
  • Rights requests. The Rules require responses to access, correction and erasure requests within ninety days; confirm your tool can delete a contact and its activity history.
  • Security. Restrict who can export lists; failure to maintain safeguards can attract penalties up to ₹250 crore.
  • SMS add-ons. If you use SMS from the same platform, register headers and templates on DLT as required under TRAI's 2025 amendment regulations.
  • Promotional pricing. Put the post-promotion price in writing.
  • Purchased lists. Avoid them: they lack consent and damage sender reputation.

KPIs to track

  • Delivery rate and hard bounce rate.
  • Spam complaint rate per campaign.
  • Unique click rate and click-to-open rate (treat open rates cautiously because some mail apps pre-load images).
  • Conversion rate and revenue per email sent.
  • List growth rate net of unsubscribes.
  • Unsubscribe rate per campaign.
  • Automation revenue share: revenue from flows versus one-off campaigns.
  • Cost per 1,000 emails and cost per active subscriber.

Deliverability basics every Indian sender should get right

A cheaper plan is worthless if emails land in spam. Deliverability depends far more on your practices than on the tool, although the tool must support the right settings.

Authenticate your domain. Publish SPF and DKIM records for the sending service and add a DMARC policy. Mailbox providers increasingly treat unauthenticated bulk mail with suspicion. Every tool in this comparison provides instructions for adding these DNS records.

Separate marketing and transactional mail. Order confirmations, OTP emails and password resets must arrive reliably. Send marketing from a subdomain (for example, news.yourbrand.in) so that a complaint spike from a promotion does not affect critical transactional messages.

Warm up gradually. If you move a large list to a new platform or a new dedicated IP, start with your most engaged contacts and increase volume over several weeks.

Suppress inactive contacts. Contacts who have not opened or clicked for many months drag down engagement signals. Run a re-engagement campaign, then suppress those who do not respond.

Make unsubscribing easy. A visible unsubscribe link reduces spam complaints, which are more damaging than unsubscribes. It is also consistent with the right to withdraw consent under the DPDP framework.

Watch mobile rendering. Test templates on common Android email apps and on small screens. Large images and wide tables are the most frequent problems.

Questions to ask vendors

  1. What is the regular price after any promotion ends? Mailchimp's displayed prices include a 50% discount for 12 months; get the renewal price in writing.
  2. What counts as a contact? Some tools count unsubscribed or archived contacts towards your limit. Ask how to remove them from billing.
  3. What happens if we exceed our contact or email limit? Mailchimp's page notes that free-plan sending pauses if limits are exceeded; paid plans may charge overages or require an upgrade.
  4. Is a dedicated IP available, and do we need one? Dedicated IPs help only at consistently high volumes; at low volumes a shared IP with a good reputation is usually better.
  5. Can we bill in INR with a GST invoice? Confirm currency, taxes and payment methods before committing to annual billing.
  6. How are consent records stored? Ask whether the tool records the date, source form and IP address of each opt-in, and whether you can export this evidence.
  7. How fast can we delete a contact completely? Deletion must remove the contact and its activity history to support erasure requests.

Common mistakes

Choosing on the free plan alone. A free plan that fits your contact count may not fit your sending volume, as the cost model above shows.

Importing old lists without re-permission. Contacts collected years ago for a different purpose may not have valid consent under the DPDP framework, and they often generate bounces and complaints.

Sending from a free email address. Using a Gmail or Yahoo address as the sender for bulk campaigns undermines authentication. Use your own domain.

No automation. Welcome and abandoned cart flows often outperform one-off campaigns because they reach people at the moment of intent. Set them up before increasing campaign frequency.

How to choose

If your list is under 2,000 contacts and you send fewer than 6,000 emails a month, start with the Zoho Campaigns free plan. If you want rupee pricing, familiar templates and a large integration library, choose Mailchimp, but budget for the regular price after the promotion. If you have a large list that you email infrequently, or want email, SMS and WhatsApp together, get a Brevo quote. If you are a high-volume consumer brand that needs deliverability support and cross-channel engagement, talk to Netcore. Test deliverability on a small warm segment during the trial before migrating your whole list.

FAQs

What is the cheapest email marketing software in India?

Among the tools we verified, Zoho Campaigns offers the largest free allowance (2,000 contacts and 6,000 emails per month). For paid plans, Mailchimp shows Essentials from ₹770 per month on a 12-month promotion. The cheapest option depends on your contacts and sending volume.

How much does Mailchimp cost in India?

Mailchimp's pricing page shows Essentials from ₹770, Standard from ₹1,150 and Premium from ₹23,000 per month, all with a 50% discount for 12 months. The free plan supports up to 250 contacts.

Is Zoho Campaigns free?

Yes, Zoho Campaigns has a forever-free plan for up to 2,000 contacts, 6,000 emails per month and 5 users. Paid plans are priced by contact tier and include unlimited emails.

How does Brevo pricing work?

Brevo prices mainly by monthly email volume rather than contacts. Its page lists a free plan, Starter (from 5,000 emails per month), Standard, Professional (from 150,000 emails per month) and Enterprise; the price figures did not display on the page we accessed.

What is a good email delivery rate?

Aim to keep hard bounces and spam complaints as low as possible and monitor delivery rate on every send. Authenticating your domain, removing inactive contacts and avoiding purchased lists have the biggest impact.

Should I use email or WhatsApp for marketing?

Use both for different jobs. Email suits newsletters, detailed content and receipts, while WhatsApp suits short, time-sensitive messages. Both require consent, and WhatsApp messages are charged per conversation by providers.
