Quick answer: A construction firm needs attendance that works at remote sites, proves who actually turned up, and feeds payroll without retyping. Truein (face recognition, geofencing, offline mode, multi-site job tracking) and ubiAttendance (selfie, GPS, QR and kiosk punches) suit site-heavy crews. Spine HR fits firms that also want a full HRMS with payroll, expenses and recruitment in one suite. Prices are not published by any of the three, so request quotes.

Why construction attendance is a different problem

An office HR tool assumes one location, one shift and a Wi-Fi connection. A builder or contractor has a Pune tower site, a highway package in Nashik, a yard, a head office and a few sub-contractor gangs, all on different timings. Crews move between sites mid-month, some workers are on the muster roll and some belong to a labour contractor, and mobile data at a foundation pit is unreliable.

That creates three recurring leaks. Proxy punches and "buddy" entries inflate wages. Site engineers send handwritten muster sheets to head office that are keyed in days later. And overtime is argued about at month end because nobody can show where a person was on a given day. Software does not remove these problems on its own, but the right features shrink each one.

What to look for before you shortlist

Run every tool against this checklist rather than a long feature list:

  • Identity proof: face recognition or selfie plus location, not just a tap on a phone.
  • Geofencing per site: a punch only counts inside the site boundary you drew.
  • Offline capture: punches stored on the device and synced when the network returns.
  • Multi-site and job tracking: one worker, several sites, hours split correctly.
  • Shift and overtime rules you can set yourself.
  • Payroll hand-off: an export or integration, or a payroll module in the same product.
  • Contract labour: a way to include non-employee workers without a full HR profile.

If you want help narrowing the choice, the attendance software category lists more options than this guide covers.

Truein: verified clock-ins across many sites

Truein describes itself as an AI-powered time and attendance platform for multi-site, hourly workforces. According to its website, it offers face-recognition attendance with fraud detection against buddy punching and photo tricks, GPS geofencing so clock-ins happen only at approved locations, and offline clock-in for sites with poor connectivity. It also lists job-based time tracking across sites, shifts and staff categories, shift scheduling with bulk creation, and 70+ customisable policies for overtime, breaks and holidays.

Construction is one of the industries Truein names on its site, alongside facility management, logistics, manufacturing, retail, cleaning and staffing. Truein says it has 500+ customers across 25 countries, with 10,000+ locations and 500,000+ users, and names Tata Projects among its clients.

Where it fits: contractors with many sites and a lot of daily-wage or hourly crews, where proof of presence matters more than HR paperwork. Where it needs care: the payroll integrations Truein lists on its page (ADP, Paychex, QuickBooks and others) are largely global names. Pricing is not published on the vendor's website, so ask for a quote and confirm how attendance data will reach your own payroll or salary sheet in India.

ubiAttendance: flexible punch methods and field tracking

ubiAttendance says it captures each punch as "User ID + Time + Selfie + Location". Its site lists face recognition, geo-fencing, GPS tracking for field employees, QR code attendance, attendance kiosks, offline attendance, leave management, shift planning and reports for absentees and late-comers. Construction appears among the industries it names, along with manufacturing, oil and gas, logistics and security. The vendor states 5000+ clients across 101+ countries. No prices were shown on the vendor's website.

Where it fits: a firm that wants several ways to mark attendance. A site supervisor with a phone might use selfie plus GPS, a gate might use a kiosk, and a labour gang might scan a QR code. The trade-off is that more punch methods mean more policy decisions, so decide up front which method is allowed at which site.

Spine HR: attendance as one part of a full suite

Spine HR is a broader HR suite. Its website lists recruitment with AI-enabled resume screening, onboarding and offboarding, leave management, time and attendance with biometric or web login, core HRIS and payroll, and employee self-service. It adds performance management, expense and reimbursement, timesheets, an HR help desk and visitor management with OTP authentication, plus geo-tagging and geo-fencing for workforce tracking and travel location tracking for expense claims. Spine says it serves 25+ industries, including infrastructure, and claims 10,000+ clients. Pricing is by quote.

Where it fits: a mid-sized contractor or developer with a permanent head-office and project-staff base that wants payroll, claims and recruitment alongside attendance. For a crew that is mostly daily-wage labour, a full suite may be more than you need.

A four-week rollout for a contractor

Week 1: pick the pilot. Choose one live site with 30 to 60 workers and a supervisor who will actually use the app. Draw the geofence, list shifts and set overtime rules in writing before touching the tool.

Week 2: run it in parallel. Keep the paper muster sheet but also punch in the app. At the end of the week compare the two and note every mismatch. These mismatches are your real business case.

Week 3: connect payroll. Settle how hours become wages. Decide who approves exceptions, such as a worker whose phone died, and how late corrections are logged.

Week 4: extend. Move the next two sites, retire the paper sheet at the pilot site, and review the exception log with your accounts team.

Who should not buy these

Before the exclusions, one related read: construction firms often also need project and ERP tools, covered in our construction ERP guide.

If your workforce is a handful of salaried office staff plus a few labourers paid in cash weekly, a free or basic leave-and-attendance module in a general HRMS is enough. If most of your labour is supplied and paid by contractors who run their own muster, you may only need a sign-in log for compliance, not a full attendance system. And if workers have no smartphone, favour kiosk or biometric-device options, and check that the vendor supports them. For a broader comparison of HR suites, see our list of HRMS software in India and the HRMS category.

Mistakes contractors make with attendance software

Treating the tool as a camera rather than a process is the most common one. A face scan proves presence only if someone reviews exceptions, so name an owner at every site for missed punches. Another is leaving geofence radius at a default and then fighting false rejections near site edges. A third is ignoring contractor labour: if outside gangs are on your site but not in the tool, your overtime and safety headcounts will not match reality.

FAQs

Which attendance system works at construction sites with no network?

Look for offline capture. Truein and ubiAttendance both list offline attendance on their websites, storing punches on the device and syncing later. Test it at your own poorest-signal site during the pilot, not only in the demo.

Can face recognition stop proxy attendance?

It makes proxies harder, because a colleague cannot just tap for someone else. Truein says its face recognition includes fraud detection against photo tricks. No tool removes the need for a supervisor who checks exceptions.

Do I need separate payroll software for site workers?

Not always. Spine HR lists payroll in its suite. With Truein or ubiAttendance you would usually export hours into your existing payroll or accounts process, so confirm the hand-off in the demo.

Is geofencing accurate enough for a large site?

It depends on your phone GPS and the boundary you draw. Draw it slightly generously, test at the edges, and keep a supervisor-approval route for genuine failures.

How much does construction attendance software cost?

The three vendors in this guide do not publish prices on their websites, so you need a quote based on headcount and sites. Ask for the cost per active worker per month and whether it changes when crews are seasonal.
