Quick answer: A customer data platform (CDP) collects events from your website, app, store and messaging tools, matches them to one person, and sends that profile back to your marketing tools. Only RudderStack, at $0 for 250,000 events a month, and CleverTap's Core at $85 a month publish prices; Segment, MoEngage, WebEngage, Netcore, Bloomreach and mParticle quote privately. Most SMBs need a CRM first.

How we researched this: We read the pricing pages and CDP product pages of RudderStack, Twilio Segment, CleverTap, MoEngage, WebEngage, Netcore, Bloomreach and mParticle, CleverTap's identity documentation, and the Government of India's press release on the DPDP Rules. Facts and prices are as published in October 2026.

What a CDP does that a CRM and an email tool do not

Marketers often search for this as single customer view software CDP, and the two terms mean the same thing here: one profile per person. A CRM remembers the people your sales team has spoken to. An email tool remembers who is on a list. A CDP exists for a different reason: the same shopper appears as an anonymous browser cookie on your site, a logged-in ID in your app, a phone number on a WhatsApp chat and an email on a Shopify order, and nobody can tell that these are one person. A CDP does three jobs on that problem: it collects events, it resolves identity into one profile, and it activates that profile in other tools.

Identity is the hard part, and vendors handle it differently. CleverTap's documentation describes the starting point: every visitor gets a profile automatically, which "starts as anonymous and becomes addressable when the user logs in for the first time". Its OnUserLogin method then identifies multiple users on the same device, and its docs warn against using ProfilePush to change a user's unique identity. Netcore's CDP page claims it profiles visitors at the first anonymous click rather than after sign-up, without explaining the mechanism. Treat that sentence as an item for the demo.

The practical meaning for an Indian business is mundane. A repeat buyer in Nagpur who orders on WhatsApp, browses on the app and pays by UPI should not get a "first-order 10% off" push because the tool saw a new device. Whether a CDP is worth buying depends on how often that goes wrong, which is a data question, not a software one.

Prices and pricing models, side by side

Shortlisting customer data platform CDP SaaS India vendors is harder than it should be: only two of the eight we checked publish list prices. Figures are per the vendors' pages (checked October 2026).

VendorPrice shownWhat it is billed on
RudderStackFree "forever"; Growth $265 a month billed monthly, 15% off annual; Enterprise custom. Page shows "$" with no currency codeEvents per month: 250K free; Growth tiers 1M, 3M, 5M, 7M, 10M, 25M, then talk to sales
Segment (Twilio)No list prices; "Customer Data Pipeline" and "Customer Data Platform" plans, CDP by custom quoteMonthly tracked users (MTUs); invoice payment; free trial, no card required
CleverTapCore $85 a month (page names no currency), taxes extra; Pro and Ultimate by demoMonthly active users or data points; Core MAU tiers from 5,000 to 100,000+; 30-day trial, billing starts afterwards

Four details are worth knowing before you shortlist:

  • RudderStack's Free plan stops, it does not bill. Its pricing FAQ says that on the Free plan data processing will stop after your second consecutive overage. That protects your wallet but can silently pause tracking, so set an alert at 80% of the quota. Support on Free is community Slack only. An event is defined as "a data point generated by a website, app, server, or cloud application".
  • RudderStack's plans change what the warehouse does. Warehouse sync is every 3 hours on Free, 30 minutes on Growth and 5 minutes on Enterprise. Reverse ETL connections are 10, 25 and unlimited; team members are 10 on Free and unlimited above it.
  • Segment's split matters. On Twilio's page, the Pipeline plan covers sources, 700+ destinations, functions and Reverse ETL, while the CDP plan adds identity resolution, the Profile API, audiences and Journeys. If you buy the pipeline only, you are not buying identity resolution.
  • CleverTap's tiers separate features, not just volume. Core lists real-time behavioural segmentation and built-in experimentation; Pro adds automated segmentation and send-time and channel optimisation; Ultimate adds intent prediction, product recommendations and up to 10 years of data retention against 3 years on Core and Pro.

Because RudderStack and CleverTap show prices with a dollar sign, ask any vendor for a rupee quote and how GST will be invoiced; our note on SaaS priced in rupees explains why that matters.

Two architectures: warehouse-first and engagement-suite

Warehouse-first CDPs treat your data warehouse as the home of truth. RudderStack's homepage says identity graphs and customer 360 tables are built "in your warehouse". WebEngage's CDPx page takes a similar line: it connects to your existing warehouse and reads live data without copying it, and it lets you define entities, such as policies, accounts or vehicles, rather than flattening everything into events. Bloomreach lists Shopify, Snowflake and Databricks among its connectors, and MoEngage's homepage says it combines first-party data with warehouses such as Snowflake and Databricks. This model suits teams with a data engineer and an existing warehouse; see our guide to database and warehouse hosting in India.

Engagement suites put the profile inside the messaging tool. The CleverTap customer engagement platform and the MoEngage cross channel marketing SaaS hold the profile and send the push, SMS, WhatsApp and in-app messages from the same place. MoEngage's CDP page describes unified profiles from web, app and offline sources, RFM and affinity segmentation, and predictive segmentation, though it does not describe identity resolution or warehouse integration on that page. This model suits a marketing team without data engineers. Compare these suites in our CleverTap, MoEngage and WebEngage guide and the Netcore versus WebEngage comparison.

The trade-off is lock-in. The warehouse-first route keeps your history portable; the suite route is faster to launch.

Whichever route you lean towards, put five questions to every vendor in the demo:

  1. How does the tool merge an anonymous profile with a known one, and can a wrong merge be undone?
  2. What exactly is billed (events, tracked users, active users or data points), and what happens when you exceed the quota?
  3. How often does data sync to your warehouse and to the destinations that send messages?
  4. Where is the data stored, and who can export it if you leave?
  5. Can you invoice in rupees with GST, and what is the notice period for non-renewal?

Three Indian scenarios worked through

A Bengaluru D2C skincare brand with Shopify, a mobile app and a WhatsApp tool. The events add up quickly. Suppose 20,000 monthly active users open four sessions of 15 tracked events each: 20,000 × 4 × 15 = 1,200,000 events a month. That is nearly five times RudderStack's 250,000-event free quota and above its 1M tier. The lesson is to track fewer, better-named events (add to cart, checkout started, order placed, WhatsApp opt-in) before comparing prices. Cut the same user base to 8 events per session and it falls to 640,000. A brand this size would also compare the suites, Bloomreach and MoEngage, which connect Shopify data to messaging.

A Pune lender with an app and a branch network. Customer identity here is a mobile number plus a loan account ID, and the risk is a wrong merge. Ask each shortlisted vendor, in writing, what happens when two people share a number, who can unmerge a profile, and how long raw events are retained. CleverTap lists data retention of 3 years on Core and Pro and 10 years on Ultimate, which affects how far back a profile can look.

A 40-person Jaipur jewellery chain with eight showrooms. It does not need a CDP. A CRM with purchase history and WhatsApp reminders covers its needs, and our guide to the best CRM software in India is the better starting point. A CDP earns its cost when several systems must agree on a customer and nobody has the time to reconcile spreadsheets.

Privacy, DPDP and where the data lives

A CDP concentrates personal data in one place, which raises the stakes under the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules. According to the PIB press release of 14 November 2025, the Rules set an 18-month phased compliance timeline and require standalone, clear consent notices that explain the specific purpose for which personal data is collected and used. It adds that data principals have the right to access, correct, update or erase their data, with requests answered within a maximum of 90 days. A profile that merges web, app and store data therefore needs a clear answer to "which purposes did this person consent to?"

Vendors position themselves differently. WebEngage says its ZeroPII approach keeps customer personal details in your network, with a small agent that you run in your own environment so that WebEngage only sees scrambled IDs. RudderStack's homepage says it covers data quality, compliance and PII handling. Check whichever option you choose against the questions in our DPDP compliance software guide and our note on data residency for SaaS in India.

Who should not buy a CDP yet

  • A single-channel business. If you only send email and WhatsApp from one tool, that tool already holds your profile.
  • A team with no one to own the data. Vendor case studies, such as Netcore's claim that its CDP unified 16 million profiles for Adidas, describe enterprise projects with dedicated owners. Netcore says it works with 6,500+ brands, MoEngage's homepage says 1350+ consumer brands and CleverTap says 2000+, but those are each vendor's own counts.
  • A business with fewer than a few thousand repeat customers. Spreadsheet joins are cheaper, and a CRM report from our guide to CRM reports that drive growth is likely enough.
  • A buyer who cannot get a price. If a vendor will not give a written quote with volume assumptions, treat that as a sign about the contract to come.

An eight-week rollout

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: define five events and three IDs. Pick the events that matter and the identifiers you trust (login ID, verified phone, email).
  2. Weeks 3 to 4: connect two sources. Usually the website or app plus the order system. Test the merge on 50 known customers.
  3. Weeks 5 to 6: build two segments such as "bought once, no repeat in 60 days" and "cart abandoned, opted in to WhatsApp". Send them through one channel.
  4. Weeks 7 to 8: measure the repeat purchase rate against a holdout group, then decide whether to widen the scope.

FAQs

What is a customer data platform in simple terms?

A CDP is software that gathers customer events from your website, app, shops and messaging tools, matches them to one person and shares that profile with your marketing tools. Twilio describes its CDP as producing "identity-resolved profiles", and CleverTap's docs show how an anonymous profile becomes addressable at first login.

Is a CDP the same as a CRM?

No. A CRM manages relationships and sales activity, usually entered by people. A CDP collects behavioural data automatically and unifies it across systems. Many businesses use both.

How much does a CDP cost in India?

Published prices are rare. RudderStack lists a free plan with 250K events a month and a Growth plan at $265 a month billed monthly; CleverTap lists Core at $85 a month; Segment, MoEngage, WebEngage, Netcore, Bloomreach and mParticle quote by request. Ask for an INR quote with GST.

Does MoEngage or CleverTap work as a CDP?

Both describe unified customer profiles inside their engagement platforms. CleverTap's page uses "Customer Data & Analytics" rather than the term CDP, and MoEngage's CDP page describes unified profiles and segmentation. Ask each how it merges identities.

Do I need a CDP if I use Shopify?

Not necessarily. Shopify holds orders and customers, and the tools you use for WhatsApp or email may already read them. A CDP pays off when app, web and offline data must agree. See our comparison of marketing automation tools first.
