Quick answer: For API-driven bulk payouts, Cashfree Payments publishes a payout fee table (₹3 to ₹15 per transfer) and a batch endpoint that takes up to 5,000 transfers in one call. RazorpayX suits finance teams that want a dashboard: CSV bulk files of up to 50,000 payouts, approval chains, vendor onboarding and TDS, on plans from ₹1,499 a month plus per-payout charges. Verify accounts first (Cashfree lists ₹3 per check) and keep your books in Zoho Books or Tally.
How we researched this: We read Cashfree's payouts, bank-account-verification and pricing pages and its Batch Transfer v2 reference, RazorpayX's payouts and pricing pages, Razorpay's fund-account-validation docs, Setu's and Decentro's product pages, Zoho Books' pricing and BillPay help pages, RBI's RTGS and NEFT FAQs and the Ministry of MSME's Samadhaan page. All as checked in October 2026.
Why payables deserve their own system
A 30-person Pune auto-component maker pays about 140 vendors every month. Half are small job-work shops, some are micro or small enterprises, and every payment is typed into a bank portal by one accounts executive. That is where wrong account numbers, duplicate payments and late-payment penalties come from.
Two rules make lateness expensive. The Ministry of MSME's Samadhaan page says a buyer who does not pay a micro or small enterprise within 45 days of accepting the goods or services is liable for compound interest, with monthly rests, at three times the RBI bank rate, and that any micro or small enterprise with a valid Udyam registration can file a case. A PIB release of July 2023 adds that under Section 43B of the Income Tax Act, the deduction for expenditure on payments to MSMEs is allowed only when payment is actually made. Your CA will know how both apply to each supplier; the practical point is that your payment calendar should be driven by due dates, not by the day someone finds time.
The rails and their limits
Every payout API sits on the same four rails, so know their rules before you read any rate card:
| Rail | What the official or vendor source says | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| NEFT | RBI: available 24x7 on all days; RBI imposes no limit (banks may set their own) | Routine vendor runs of any size |
| RTGS | RBI: 24x7x365 since 14 December 2020; minimum ₹2,00,000, no maximum | Large invoices |
| IMPS | Razorpay's FAQ: up to ₹5 lakh per transaction | Small urgent payments, refunds |
| UPI | Razorpay's FAQ: typically ₹1-2 lakh a day, varies by bank | Small payees with a UPI ID |
Cashfree's payout FAQ adds that transfers above ₹2,00,000 are restricted by banking hours and can take longer, and that bank transfers happen "instantly or within a few minutes" depending on the requirement.
Cashfree payouts: API-first, with a published price list
Cashfree Payments positions payouts as multi-bank infrastructure: you can connect several bank accounts, route payouts between them, and keep balances in one place, with failure handling and reconciliation built in. Its product page lists vendor and seller payouts, scheduled bulk disbursements and refunds as use cases, and a Tally integration that syncs payout data.
The batch endpoint. In Cashfree's Batch Transfer v2 reference, one request sends money to many beneficiaries:
- Your own
batch_transfer_id(up to 60 characters) and atransfersarray, each with atransfer_id, amount (minimum ₹1.00), atransfer_mode(including imps, neft, rtgs, upi) and either a savedbeneficiary_idor inline bank account number, IFSC or VPA. - A limit of 5,000 transfers per batch in production and 1,000 by default in test.
- Authentication through
x-client-idandx-client-secretheaders plus a requiredx-api-version. - A response of
RECEIVEDonly means the request was accepted. You learn the final state from the Get Batch Transfer Status API or webhooks, and statuses includeAPPROVAL_PENDING(needs approval in the dashboard),SUCCESS,FAILED,REJECTEDandREVERSED. For a 5XX response, Cashfree's docs say not to start another transaction before checking the batch status, which is exactly the rule that prevents double payment.
The older v1 and v1.2 transfer APIs are being retired in favour of v2, so build on v2.
What it costs. Cashfree's pricing page (checked October 2026) lists payouts, excluding bank charges and GST:
| Amount | NEFT | RTGS | IMPS / UPI / Amazon Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹1,000 | ₹3 | ₹4 | ₹6 |
| ₹1,000 to ₹25,000 | ₹5 | ₹6 | ₹8 |
| Above ₹25,000 | ₹8 | ₹10 | ₹15 |
For the Pune maker above, assume 100 vendors at about ₹18,000 and 40 at about ₹1.5 lakh. By NEFT that is 100 × ₹5 + 40 × ₹8 = ₹820 a month; by IMPS it is 100 × ₹8 + 40 × ₹15 = ₹1,400. The saving from picking NEFT for routine runs is real but small; the bigger cost of a bad payout is a wrong beneficiary, covered below.
Cashgram is Cashfree's payout link: you send a link by SMS, email or WhatsApp, the recipient enters their own payout details, and funds move to their chosen account. It suits freelancers and one-time vendors whose bank details you do not have.
RazorpayX: a banking dashboard for the finance team
RazorpayX is built around a business account with payout tooling on top. Its payouts page lists IMPS, NEFT, RTGS and UPI payouts (including bank holidays), bulk payouts by file upload with templates that flag errors before submission and support for 50,000 payouts in a single file, multi-level approval workflows with batch approval and an audit trail, payout links for payees who enter their own bank or UPI details, scheduling up to 90 days ahead, automatic retries for failed transfers and low-balance alerts.
Business Banking+ plans, billed quarterly on RazorpayX's pricing page (checked October 2026):
| Plan | Per month (billed quarterly) | Quarterly total | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | ₹1,499 (list ₹1,999) | ₹4,497 + GST | Payout rails, automated beneficiary onboarding, smart approvals, mobile app |
| Pro | ₹4,199 (list ₹5,999) | ₹12,597 + GST | Bulk payments, payouts to beneficiaries without full bank details, team roles, custom approval flows |
| Vendor Payments | ₹9,799 (list ₹13,999) | ₹29,397 + GST | Invoice OCR, vendor onboarding, centralised visibility, automated TDS |
Two cautions from the page itself: all subscriptions are "in addition to per-payout charges", which are not printed on the pricing page, and API access is a separate add-on at ₹4,000 a month. Other add-ons, including bank account validation and ERP integrations, are listed without prices. The feature list also names a GST input tax credit checker and TDS on invoices linked to the vendor's PAN, which is why a firm with many invoices and few developers may prefer RazorpayX to an API-only product.
Verify the account before you pay it
Razorpay's own fund-account-validation docs say why: a payout to a mistyped account number still goes through if that account exists. They also warn that a completed validation status does not mean the account is valid; you must compare the beneficiary name the bank returns with the name you hold.
Methods you will meet across providers:
- Penny drop. A small deposit, often ₹1, is sent and the bank returns the holder's name. Cashfree says penny-drop checks are usually done within a minute.
- Penniless. Cashfree and Razorpay both describe a real-time check with no deposit, so nothing to reconcile.
- Reverse penny drop. The payee sends ₹1 by UPI to you, proving they control the account. Setu and Cashfree both offer this.
- UPI VPA verification. Cashfree's UPI penny drop resolves the account holder behind a VPA with no IFSC needed.
| Provider | What its page lists | Price on the page |
|---|---|---|
| Cashfree | Penny-drop, penniless, bulk, reverse penny drop, UPI; 600+ banks; REST API, webhooks, SDKs for Node, Python, PHP and Java | ₹100 free credits, then ₹3 per verification |
| RazorpayX | Fund account validation for bank accounts and VPAs; amount validation with a random ₹1-2 transfer | Add-on; price not published |
| Setu | Mobile-to-Bank, VPA-to-Bank, penny drop and reverse penny drop behind one API with fallback routing | "Contact sales" |
| Decentro | Penny-drop resource listed beside payouts and KYC APIs | Not published |
For PAN, Aadhaar and GST-side checks on new vendors, see KYC, PAN and Aadhaar verification APIs. A sensible rule for a vendor master: no first payment until the account name matches the legal name on the invoice and the GSTIN.
Reminders, approvals and reconciliation
"Automated payment reminder software" means two things for a finance team. On the receivables side, tools remind your customers; on the payables side, they remind your team of due dates.
- Zoho Books (India pricing page, checked October 2026): the free plan lists invoices, quotes, bills, online payments and automated payment reminders for one user plus an accountant; Standard is ₹749 a month billed annually (₹899 monthly) and adds e-invoices, expense and bill tracking, a customer portal and GST filing reports. The BillPay add-on, ₹2,999 a month billed annually, covers vendor batch payments, approvals and two-way or three-way matching. Zoho's help page describes the batch flow: create a batch from unpaid bills, submit for approval, approve, export a file, upload it to your bank's portal and then mark the batch processed with a reference. Payment itself happens in the bank portal, so BillPay is a control layer, not a payment rail.
- Bharat Connect in Zoho Books. Zoho says the India edition connects to NPCI Bharat BillPay's Bharat Connect network to exchange invoices, purchase orders and credit notes and to pay and receive through connected banking, UPI and cards, with real-time matching. GSTIN verification is required at setup. See our BBPS guide for businesses and Bharat BillPay.
- Customer reminders at source. Razorpay Invoices, part of Razorpay, sends invoices by email and SMS with partial payments; Cashfree Payment Links collect by SMS, email and WhatsApp. Our guide on collecting payments faster with reminders and UPI links has a schedule you can copy.
- Tally users. Cashfree lists a Tally integration for payouts; check with your TallyPrime partner how it maps ledgers.

A monthly payout run, and which tool to pick
- Freeze the vendor master. New vendors need PAN, GSTIN, a cancelled cheque and a verified account before the first payment.
- Due-date list. Pull unpaid bills sorted by due date, with MSME suppliers flagged.
- Batch and approve. One person builds the batch; a second approves. Both RazorpayX and Cashfree support an approval state.
- Choose rails. NEFT for routine, RTGS for ₹2 lakh and above, IMPS only for urgent small payments.
- Submit once. Use the batch ID as an idempotency key and, on a 5XX or timeout, read the batch status before retrying.
- Reconcile by webhook or file. Mark each payment success or failed with the bank reference in your books.
- Review failures the same day; most are wrong IFSC or a closed account.
Choose Cashfree if you have developers and want transparent per-transfer pricing and a clean batch API. Choose RazorpayX if the finance team wants approvals, vendor onboarding and TDS in a dashboard and can absorb a plan fee. Use Zoho Books BillPay if you only want control and a clean audit trail while paying from your existing bank portal. If you pay fewer than 20 vendors a month, a bank's own bulk-upload tool plus a free accounting plan may be enough; none of these tools earns its fee at that scale. For the wider market, see the payment gateway category and accounting software, and for the collection side of the same company see Razorpay vs Cashfree fees.
