Notion Labs

Notion Labs, Inc. is a San Francisco software company that makes Notion, a connected workspace for notes, documents, wikis, project management and databases. Ivan Zhao and Simon Last founded the company in 2013. After an early version struggled, the team rebuilt the product in 2015, and Zhao has been CEO since the company was founded.

Its main products are the Notion workspace, Notion AI (writing, search and question-answering built into the workspace), Notion Calendar and Notion Mail. Businesses use it for internal wikis, project and task tracking, meeting notes and lightweight databases, and a large template gallery covers common team workflows. Integrations connect Notion to tools such as Slack, GitHub and Google Drive.

Notion is sold online on a self-serve basis. Its tiers are Free, Plus, Business and Enterprise, priced per member per month in US dollars, and Enterprise contracts are negotiated with its sales team. Indian users typically subscribe with international cards, and educational plans are available for students and teachers. Admin controls, SAML single sign-on and audit logs are limited to higher tiers.

The company's About page describes an office in downtown San Francisco and other offices around the world. Notion is privately held and backed by investors including Sequoia Capital, and a 2021 funding round valued it at US$10 billion. Press reports put its active users at more than 100 million, a figure the company has also cited publicly, although precise figures change over time. The company has also bought smaller startups, including the calendar app Cron, which became Notion Calendar, to extend the workspace.
