Start with payroll. If the statutory side is wrong, nothing else matters — ask the vendor to run a live payroll for a sample employee in your state and show you the PF, ESI and PT calculations.
Next, check how attendance actually reaches the system. Biometric device integration, geo-tagged mobile check-in and shift rostering are three very different problems, and most vendors are strong at one and weak at the others.
Finally, look at what happens at scale. Many Indian HRMS products are priced per employee per month with a floor of fifty or a hundred employees, which makes them expensive for a twenty-person team and cheap for a five-hundred-person one.

On App Advisor's ranking, greytHR, Zoho People, Kredily lead this list of 156 products. "Best" depends on your size and workflow, so use the shortlist tool with your budget and team size rather than taking a ranking at face value.
Published pricing in this list starts at ₹40 per month. 13 of the 156 products have a free plan. Products sold only on request show "On request" — we never estimate a price a vendor has not published.
Yes — 13 of the 156 products here have a real free tier, not just a trial. Free plans usually cap users, records or transactions, so check the limit against your monthly volume before you commit.
84 of the 156 products listed are built in India. That usually means GST, TDS and UPI are handled natively, support runs in Indian hours and invoices come in rupees.
Most Indian HRMS products sit between ₹40 and ₹150 per employee per month, often with a minimum billing floor. A few offer a free tier for very small teams. Published pricing for each product is shown on its page, read from the vendor's own site.
The better Indian products do, including challan generation and return filing formats. Global HRMS platforms usually do not handle Indian statutory payroll natively and need a local payroll partner bolted on — which is a real cost and a real point of failure.
